he was offered 6 years x $8.5M from another team and turned it down

also this (no surprise):

Treliving told LeBrun that next up on his agenda is locking up Weegar.
“That’s our intention with him,” Treliving said. “We’re just working through it.”

This is how I explained it to my buddy who is an Oiler fan.
Oilers
Neal - $1.916
Sekera - $1.5
Lucic - $750k
Bonus Overage - $896k
Total - $5.06
Flames
Kadri - $7 mil
The Flames have 0 wasted cap space. Most teams have some sort of wasted cap space. You can spend $7 mil on Kadri without wasted cap on the books.

The impact of his age and his salary over the course of the contract is mainly dependant on the cap, and also what cap saving measures will be available if and when he slows down and is uneconomical.

Worry about it, if and when it happens.

Yeah, about that...

Should we worry? No.
Almost all UFA contracts for top players will eventually stink. Enjoy it while you can.

He's not wrong, though. All those numbers listed are for players that count against the Oilers cap, but don't contribute a single thing to the roster. Every player the Flames are paying actually plays for the team. No buyouts. No retention.

I know you didn't ask, but I am going to give it to you anyways. Here is my projections for Flames forwards in 2022–23:
Huberdeau [90–95 pts] · Lindholm [70–80 pts] · *RW [50–60 pts]
*LW [30–40 pts] · Kadri [60–70 pts] · Mangiapane [50–60 pts]
*LW [30–40 pts] · Backlund [35–45 pts] · Coleman [35–45 pts]
Lucic [15–20 pts] · Rooney [15–20 pts] · Lewis [10–20 pts]
* Tyler Toffoli, Dylan Dube, and Pelletier or Ruzicka.
|
So your top-6 range would be 350 pts to 405 pts last years top-6 had 428
your bottom 6 would have 150 to 190 pts Last year all the forwards not in the top 6 kicked in 140 pts
Backlund and Coleman and likely Pelletier/ruzicka would kick in 110 to 130 pts with a reduced role?
How do you see the TOI by lines. Does Backlund hang on to his 17 minutes as #3C? Lindholm had just under 20 minutes last season Kadri had 19 minutes last year.... Monahan as 3C had 14 minutes
Huberdeau had 19:35 Do you see the top line playing less?
Nice that you were able to put out your expectations. Any adjustments?

He at least plays for the team...also $0 starting next season
As for Kadri he didn't want to join a loser just for more money...that's a good sign.

The Flames' top 20 forwards combined for 553 points last year. If you take the mid-point of each of Textcritic's estimates (which I think are quite reasonable), you get 542 points, pretty much identical.
Last year, the Flames' top 6 D combined for 196 points. Gudbransson and his 17 points are out, replaced by Weegar, who had 44. Can the defense - which is better this year - improve on last year's point totals? Seems like a fairly reasonable expectation.
I believe and expect that the Flames' offense will be pretty similar to last year, relative to where they were league-wide. We don't know if goals will be up or down or the same as last year, but I expect the Flames to once again be around 6th in total offense.

Without knowing precisely what the danger is, would you say it's time for us to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside?

if anyone should worry about his age it is kadri himself.
i have found that as i get older, i get more body hair in places that never had hair, i complain a lot more about trival stuff, and i am thankful for the ability to access a little blue pill for "gametime"

This is really only a 5 year contract, as the last two years are designed for a buyout. I’m not worried about his production for the next 3-4 years and then if we need to, he’s a 2.3M buyout.

It is definitely a contract that could start going south in year 2 or 3, but it makes sense given the age of the rest of the team.
Best forward is Huberdeau and he's 29. Best D is Tanev. He's 32. Goalie is 32.
The youngest guys in their core group are Lindholm, Mangipane, Hanifin, and Andersson and all of them are in the peak years.
If the Flames aren't going to go for it now, then when?
