I understand it always has to be warm when you get 8months of winter, but it really is a shame.

Not everyone skis. Warm weather still sounds light years better.

And when you have people that have careers, are in school, etc. sometimes there are only certain days when you can get everyone together for a family trip.
Thats why we did it. Thats why travelling at Christmas and Spring Break is so expensive, its not just because its a nice time to get away, some people are trapped by timing and those are times almost everyone has off.

Have you considered making up a fake business trip and going on a vacation alone?

Accommodation costs are multiplied by 3x everywhere and flights are 2x... I didn't think costs and crowds were part of the equation for the OP if he's doing Xmas away.
And yes I have done it. Whistler one year and Fernie another... fantastic memories for both.

Fair point, I did address that.

My mom took us to Disney over Christmas the second time we went (lucky I know). The extra Christmas element is actually kind of nice. Additional shows and parades, parks open later, I would re consider this idea.

Quiet times at Disney can be awesome, but you'll also run into several attractions being closed for maintenance/etc. Peak times they are as wide open and fully staffed as possible.

Take them to the SoCal beaches.
I am trying to figure out a Christmas trip as well. Looking at Dec 26 or 27 to Jan 1 or 2 depending on flights. We have a bunch of Marriott points to burn for a free week of hotels. Hawaii is out. SoCal is the likely choice because it is a short flight, good weather, nice beaches and offers a lot to do. Maybe Palm Springs or Phoenix but I think my kids would prefer the beaches. Maybe Mazatlan or Cabo but we would be in a non-AI resort. Puerto Rico is high on my list but the flights are not very convenient. Florida (Fort Lauderdale/Miami and the Keys are nice but the beaches were awful this summer because of some Bermuda seagrass problem. I'm thinking about possibly going to NYC but I really think I would prefer a week in the heat on a beach.

San Diego is pretty great but having just spent time there we enjoyed the area just north around Oceanside to San Clemente the best. There is a military base in between but either is close enough to enjoy amenities in San Diego or LA/Disney and this area is more laid back and has so many great California beaches that aren't packed even in high seasons.

Carslbad/Oceanside is really good. Bonus points for having Legoland which is pretty great for younger kids. My kid's loved the hotel and the elevators that had light shows and music when the door closed.

Though you're not really getting beach-type weather on the coast in California in December. The normal highs for December are 18-19º and the water temperature is about 13-14º. Still nice weather, but almost no one's in the water at that time of year without a wetsuit. Whereas even in the middle of winter, the water in Florida, Hawaii, or most of Mexico is in the 22-25º range.
I've spent almost every Christmas in California for the last decade, and while it's an amazing change of pace from Canada's winter, I rarely even wear shorts that time of year because it's a bit too cold, particularly with the breeze on the coast.

As long as the sun is out I'll be in shorts and a t shirt and my kids will be playing in the water. They may not be swimming but they'll be waste deep splashing around. Plus global warming means it could be unseasonably hot.

B’s folks winter down in Palm Springs, we have gone a few times during Christmas. It’s never hotter than low 20s, so it ain’t that hot. The god damn wind tunnel that it is built in also makes it pretty crap for flight disruptions which is always a treat. It’s also kinda boring there, sorry, PS lovers.

It's not extremely practical for most people but Medellin Colombia is amazing at Christmas if you still want to experience the holiday somewhat. It's spring-like temperatures (mid 20's) and no beach but they have Christmas light displays throughout the city that are truly amazing. Pablo Escobar checked out of there years ago so it's much safer too.

This makes me sad. I love my In-laws and couldn’t imagine spending Christmas without them, never mind going far out of my way to ditch them. Not sure if I’m fortunate, weird or normal but we enjoy spending time together and have travelled with each other on many vacations. It was the same with my parents as well.

Am I the only person that thought this thread would have something to do the the in-laws being big Oilers fans? How bad can they be if they aren't Oilers fans?

Thanks very much for the suggestions everyone.
I can appreciated the suggestions to spend time in town with family but the family situation is different an I have the full support of my wife in planning a trip away.
