This will be a steal of a contract when the cap goes up big in 2 years. Doesn't kick in for a year so maybe 1 year of being over paid

Based on his past seasons in the NHL and other leagues I wouldn't be surprised if last season was a career year for him.

LOL...crapping on?
Good lord this place lately.
Simply saying that im not convinced he will live up to the deal. Is that out of bounds somehow?
But carry on.

Well, I don’t love it that’s for sure. They had a lot of time to wait and see if last years success was a flash in the pan of if he’s the real deal. Especially with being an RFA. What’s done is done though, hope it works out…

Looks like another Buffalo mistake waiting to happen. Thompson was an RFA, there was no rush to get this deal done without a larger sample size.

He’s a pretty one-dimensional player, not good in the d zone. Can’t see him sustaining those numbers either.

On the other hand if he scores 35 again the deal goes up significantly. I’m not sure they got enough of a risk premium and would think 6 would have been better but if he replicated this season signing now was the correct move.

Thompson helped me win my hockey pool last year. Good for him. We're both winners now.

38 goals and 68 points in 78 games for a bad Buffalo team last season. He had a very good year.
The question now though is that a sign of things to come, or just one really good year? The Sabres are betting it's the former. It's such an outlier of what he's done so far in his career that it's really tough to call this a great (or even good) deal. For now, anyways.

Scoring points on a bad team is easier in many cases...no commitment to D and playing higher in the lineup than you would elsewhere

This, alas, is true. Remember the time Valeri Bure scored 35 goals?

We would be losing our **** if Treliving extended Dube/Mangiapane or whoever else to a 7 year/50m if he potted 66% of his career points in 78 games. Just way too much risk, especially when the guy was still as asset on your books the following year.

Fair contract for his numbers last year
Question is can he do it again? He is 24 so why not?
It’s a decent gamble but they didn’t really have to do it one year in advance. They must have liked him a lot more than the Flames did with Mangiapane and Kylington.

Okposo was a good signing that got derailed due to injury. He was probably the best UFA signed that off-season inclusive of Lucic and a really solid player in his prime.
Skinner was a bad contract, but he was a consistent 30 goal guy his whole career too.
Ristolainen was always a bad deal because he mever actually performed up to the level of his role.
I don't know if Tage Thompson can maintain his production, and I think the AAV is steep given the risk, but if you believe in someone's skillset, I think long term deals for guys in their twenties are the best option. Short term deals for guys in their twenties and long term deals for guys in their 30s are not something to brag about.

Wouldn't his deal be cheaper to buy out also if need be?
