Didn't the news already come out? They are hosting the draft in 2023.

I wouldn't say we have a log jam on D. I think we have 6 NHL defencemen and then a few other ones we hope can be NHL D if needed. Sure, our 6 NHL D are top-4 on most other teams, meaning some will be playing below where they should be playing... but we still only have 6 NHL D. I see no value in getting rid of any of them.

I keep harping on this, but I'd rather trade #3C Backlund for a #2RW and then give Dube the 3C spot. Maybe we throw in a pick and/or a prospect not named Pelletier, Coronato, Zary or Wolf to make it happen, but so be it.

I've been thinking about the Darryl as GM and Butter years quite a bit with this D core actually. Those teams almost every year had the "best D in the league" on paper and it never lived up to expectations. I'd rather have an elite top 4, cheap bottom pair and riches of forward talent. that's just my opinion based on recent cup winners

If we could trade Hanifin+ for a top 6 RW then I think we have a real shot to be a contender.

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Mier/Pastrnak

Mangiapane - Kadri - Tofolli

That is a real heavy top 6

Krejci has stated Bergeron and Pasta were enormously instrumental in him agreeing to return to Boston, so I'd be shocked if Pastrnak was still available.

Move out a surplus defenceman, even if it's for picks/prospects ---which can also be flipped at trade deadline for playoff reinforcements.

Finally have some good center depth for all of 3 hours and you want to trade Backlund lmao

EDIT on the Wills front, don't know how to link to posts, ha, but someone noted:

"I heard this, and that’s what Wills said, though he was pretty clear that it was just a guess, and that he had a feeling the flames aren’t done here. The top 6 forward for defensemen was admittedly just an idea he had.

I honestly don’t think Wills is connected to the Flames in a way that would generate inside information on trades. Not really his style either"
Interesting for sure, Flames have 10 1-way contracts with dman

So its makes sense to move one of them

Funny enough they’d probably end up flipping them for more defensive depth at the deadline haha

This team’s top 6 D looks crowded right now, but much less so if any of those guys gets injured (likely to happen at some point this season)

I’m comfortable going in to the season with the group as it is, I think the offense will be enough and the back end is stacked. Everything looks good IMO, I’d rather wait for the deadline for additional moves

I think the Kadri signing makes it A LOT harder to extend Hanifin. He's a nice player at good value, but I'd try to sell high.

I’d be hesitant to trade him except on a home run. He’s our best left shot defenseman.

Why does Kadri signing matter in re-signing Hanifin?

Huberdeau(11M)-Kadri(7M)-XXX
Mangiapaine(5.8M)-XXX-XXX
Coleman(4.9M)-XXX-XXX
XXX-XXX-XXX

XXX-Andersson(4.5M)
XXX-XXX
XXX-XXX

Markstrom (6M)

That's what the team is once Hanifin is up for his extension. Regardless of Kadri they needed a center. Weegar signing would/could have an impact on Hanifin, but not Kadri.

Idk if it makes sense to me personally but could you see Hanifin and dube for Nylander? Seems like the flames have been linked to him since the draft

Yep, I've believed all along that Brad will definitely make a D for forward trade and acquiring a forward via free agency doesn't change that.

He is clearly going all in the next few years now, and will maximize the roster going into this season. I bet hanifin is that guy just due to his contract and what he can net in a return would not be surprised to see a legit top line forward out of the east in a trade.
