In 1993, the Norwegian publisher was shot three times.

Also in 1993, the Turkish translator was targeted by a mob who set fire to a hotel, killing 37.

As Rushdie himself has always maintained, the problem isn’t only religion - it’s intolerance of dissent. Which is why he has been a passionate champion of free speech.
