Kadri has peaked and will want too much term. The kind of deal you regret by year 3-4 and despise by year 5-6. Pass
Monahan and Tanev coming back from injuries may function like in season acquisitions. Build a solid team, see how they do, then if on the bubble, get assets and go from there.
Like others have said, maybe there is an RFA another team can't sign that we could deal for, or just focus on our own RFAs.

First line is missing a puck carrier - that was Johnny's job and that's what his camp complained about that nobody else was able to help.
Toffoli is just a finisher who needs a Gaudreau/Suzuki to feed him passes. He's a slower veteran now but can still contribute if he has a playmaker with him. I don't think he fits on the top line.

What are they doing?
It's off-season.
It's prospects camp. Brad and staff should be manning telephones , emails , agents scanning and searching all Over the planet for players WHO WANT to be here.
When not working to find a solution they are likely going to poisons jersey burning extravaganza wooohooooo!!! After going to the Stampede beer tent to slam back 30 or 40 beers and do the dosey dough, bow to whatever, promenade blah blah blah....
And lastly .....prepping for another flight risk in #19 because you know damn well he's already mouthing off to whoever will listen about his next contract and how the Tkachuks do things.
That's the best I can do with my smart ass answer.

I wonder if they still plan to move Lucic and/or Monahan now that Gaudreau left them high and dry to go to that juggernaut in his backyard.

I don't think I would. We're not short of cap space anymore so might as well be us that gets the possible upside of Monahan getting healthy and might as well be us that gets a useful leader for only $875k of cash this year.
Puts us in an unreal position heading into the year after when those contracts come off. We could be a major player in the RFA/UFA/trade market.

Yeah, I like keeping Lucic too if they don't need the cap space anymore.
Losing quite a bit of toughness with Gudbranson leaving and possibly Ritchie too.

They need to trade Monahan to Columbus and put an end to that "Johnny/Mony" era.

Yes! We can go from a Mighty Mouse to tiny Might Mouse. And I can still use what I created.

Honestly, you never know, and Phillips and Pelletier may surprise. If they both become 50+ point guys, the Flames are looking great again.
Plus next season Monahan and Lucic will be off the books, which leaves room to acquire a big UFA and/or trade.
My guess is that the Flames are playing it by ear this year, and want to see what they have sans-Gaudreau. They'll then make the big decision next year. If the team is horrible, expect guys like Coleman and Toffoli to be getting lots of ice time to showcase them for deadline deals, and a tear down starting around the deadline 2023. Conversely, the team could look good enough and they'll want to add a big piece in the summer of 2023.
Initially (somewhat in jest) I was pumping the Kadri tires, but now really glad the Flames didn't handicap their future with a big UFA signing/panic move.

Haha. If there is a "positive" to Gaudreau leaving, it's that Phillips may have a better chance of making the team now to fill the tiny forward role. Obviously he's no Gaudreau replacement, but I think he has 2nd line upside.

July 22 will tell all imo. If Tkachuk signs that QO for 1 year, we prep for the rebuild. If he doesn't, good chance he wants a longer deal. Then we go from there.
There is zero point to sign a guy like Kadri or any other high profile FA who isn't a game breaker (of Forsberg was still on the board, I'd have gone after him), until we figure out where tkachuk decides he stands
I'm actually quite happy with what Tre has done thus far in FA, which is minimal. There needs to be a ton of clarity before they pivot into something that they will regret.
It's painful to see and feel, as we want immediate results for what just happened. But the measured response is the best response in this case I believe. As said, July 22 will be telling. And we can prepare as a fan base from that point.

The Flames should be acting now, not after July 22.

I pointed this out in the UFA tracker thread: MacKinnon and Huberdeau are 2023 UFAs if they test the market.
Stand pat for one year, keep your assets, draft a higher pick. Then see if you you can bring in a Canadian superstar and lure Tkachuk to stay on a team that hopefully has had Mangiapane blossom even further. (Or if Tkachuk walks, you have room for both the Canadians). If you fail, rebuild, but at least you went for it.
No way I want to spend assets dumping Lucic + Monahan, use that money to sign Kadri long term, pick later, and rule ourselves out of better players next season.

Unless they are, at a minimum, getting 2nd line and serious PP time, neither is sniffing 50 points.

Exactly.
The Flames are in a much better position to see what's happening next year. If the young D and young forwards they do have take steps forward, they'd be in a great position to be contenders with a major UFA signing. The team has a lot of pieces....just missing a franchise forward now.
Does suck for the fans to basically have the team in limbo for a year. C'est la vie.
