It's a double edged sword. If you let him do it, you can't defend properly. If you pull your stick back, you just know that he is going to do a triple lindy and draw a penalty.

I just don't see a solution though. It's well known that McDavid constantly does stuff like this, as well as interference and embellishment of pretty much anything, but rarely ever gets called for anything. If the refs started holding McDavid to the same standard as other players, he would be in the box half the night. The NHL seems happy to not have that happen.
