He was loving husband and father too. He was a normal guy until you put a mic in front of him.

I thought he was hilarious and really talented, and played his role well. And yeah, he'd chuckle at the title.

Too bad I can't put up his cameo from Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

Took him to Bookers for lunch once, after convincing the kitchen staff to custom make him a fish dinner that wasn't on the menu...... he walked back to say thank-you and proceeded to take the entire tray of fresh made brownies for the restaurant to use on their menu that day as deserts, because they offered him one. He played the "cheap " roll to perfection..

the best time we had was at a local radio station to plug his up coming show at Yuk Yuk's and we had him read the ctrain announcements that you hear while riding.....he liked the " free Fare Zone " then the radio station called the city to " complain " about the voice and offered his as a replacement... we were in set crying laughing as we had the head of transit call us back taking it legit seriously...

2 funny...

Gilbert was the first to do 9/11 jokes days after it happened. The guy loved being that way. One of the best ever.

It was a combination of laugh and then cringe...he was a genius.

Spoiler!

What would Will Smith have done if he had attended this event...?

Ok, obviously that’s not the word you have an issue with. If it were anyone else I’d be offended right with you. He crossed every line he ever saw and I adored him.

The mods can change it obviously.
agreed. This is one time where the title is perfect.

IDK, I made a Rita MacNeil fat joke in the Rita MacNeil RIP thread and got an infraction (she loved fat jokes and even laughed about her pallbearer being a forklift). This title seems worse than that. Like, Jew jokes on CP? That's weird yo, but if mods are cool with it, who am I to judge?

Does anybody else place Gottfried in the same camp as prop comics like Carrot Top? I always looked at his voice as a prop. Say his same jokes without the eye squint and silly voice and they hit different. Not a criticism...Carrot Top seems to have done well for himself so there is room for crutch comedy.

I mean yeah, every comedian and actor would suck ass if they didn't somehow tailor their performance to fit their material and/or character. Apparently a lot of comedians are reserved and quiet, nothing like what they are on stage. It's always an act to some degree.

Lots of comics have taken on an affect to give themselves a unique voice. Todd Glass does a bit where he tells Mitch Hedberg jokes as Rodney Dangerfield and it works really well because they’re similar in style but their voices set them apart.

Gilbert’s normal voice is nothing special so he changed it for the stage. It suits him so well because his abrasive voice matches the style of jokes he tells. Call it a crutch if you want but I wouldn’t compare it to Carrot Top’s Schtick.

Gilbert used his real voice on SNL and he comes across very different. I tried to find a funny clip but that season was so dreadful that they all suck hard.

As for the title, I don’t know if Rita McNeil would want to be memorialized as fat even if she liked the Jokes. I didn’t see what you posted so I can’t comment further on that, but Gilbert absolutely would want his eulogy to be as filthy as possible. I would hate for Jewish people to feel slighted by what I wrote because it’s just about Gilbert and not them as a (historically ####ed over for no good reason) group but I’m not clever enough to come up with something else.
