The only year Kiprusoff went deep in the playoffs, he played just 38 regular-season games. Not the best example, perhaps.

April 26 to 29 is 4 days, not 2 weeks.
Point taken, although Marky could probably get better rest staying in Calgary for that final week than taking a bunch of extra flights with the team.

Vladar can ask Phillipe Sauve about what happens to your career when you are assigned a game, play like garbage and decide to get yourself thrown out for fighting because you're angry when playing for Daryl Sutter.
Pretty sure Vladar can at least stay out of the fight, so unless he get's injured if he starts a game he'll finish it if Sutter wants him to.

I would assume Markstrom will start the last game of the season either way. He won't want too long a break going into game one.

There is a saying in football that the backup QB is the most popular player in town. A few Flames fans seem to feel this way about the backup goalie.
Markstrom has been excellent and I trust Sutter to manage his workload effectively.

I think I'll trust the 2 x Cup winning coach that he knows what he's doing in regards to the goaltenders.

From Jack Adams to fired; the razors edge that sits on is apparently 2 goalie starts too many.
Wow.

I'm so glad Enoch doesn't make decisions for the Flames. Markstrom will play as much as Sutter thinks he's capable of. I'm sure the goalie coaches have a pulse on Markstrom's health and have the conversation frequently.

In fact, that was the only season Kiprussoff won a playoff series.

And he played so few because he was the 3rd stringer in SJ and played one game

Theres a very realistic chance we will wrap this division up with 13-14 days prior to our first game of the playoffs.
That is going to be a major key in getting Markstrom some rest. it felt like when we had Kiprusoff we were working him hard till the last day of the season just to get into the dance.
I think the situation here is much different and I trust Sutter with Markstroms workload.

Here are the minutes played by every Cup-winning goalie since the lockout (Regular Season / Playoffs / Total)...
- 2006 | Cam Ward // 1484 / 1320 == 2804
- 2007 | Jean-Sebastien Giguere // 3245 / 1067 == 4312
- 2008 | Chris Osgood // 2409 / 1160 == 3569
- 2009 | Marc-Andre Fleury // 3641 / 1447 == 5088
- 2010 | Antti Niemi // 2190 / 1322 == 3512
- 2011 | Tim Thomas // 3364 / 1542 == 4906
- 2012 | Jonathan Quick // 4099 / 1238 == 5337
- 2013 | Corey Crawford // 1761 / 1504 == 3265
- 2014 | Jonathan Quick // 2904 / 1605 == 4509
- 2015 | Corey Crawford // 3333 / 1223 == 4556
- 2016 | Matt Murray // 749 / 1267 == 2016
- 2017 | Matt Murray // 2766 / 669 == 3435
- 2018 | Braden Holtby // 3068 / 1386 == 4454
- 2019 | Jordan Binnington // 1876 / 1560 == 3436
- 2020 | Andrei Vasilevskiy // 3122 / 1708 == 4830
- 2021 | Andrei Vasilevskiy // 2524 / 1390 == 3914
Right now, Markstrom is at 3,387 minutes. He has already passed everyone on the list except for Fleury in 2009 and Quick in 2012. If he plays at least half the remaining games, he'll pass Fleury, but he can't pass Quick.

Wow /\ those numbers are insane year by year.
It shows the workload that can be carried but the wear and tear associated with that I don't think can be weighed appropriately but than to say there's allot of other factors involved.
If the team in front to those goalies is sound defensively, can provide goal production, has stayed healthy etc etc etc.
Really tells a story as to what's involved in winning....
We've been very fortunate this year based on what we've been through.
Think back to the whole team being shut down with Covid to now.....if you told me this whole story in advance I would have told you you were bat poop nuts.

It was mentioned also in another thread that the mid-season COVID break is also a huge factor that throws the numbers out. Markstrom went 18 straight days without playing in December, then played three of the next five over nine days, went nine straight days without a start after that, and then had only one more game in the next eight days. That is five games in 41 days, with all five occurring over a period of three weeks.
Since the end of the COVID break Markstrom has played 2,118:38 in 36 games, and 25 of those have been at home. He should be as fresh as he ever has been heading into the playoffs.
