Lucic, to me aside from being scary to look at, has been aweful. Early in the season he was playing so well. Skating well, great exit passes, using his size and skill set well. Now it seems he's always turning it over or indirectly responsible for the turnover. He also seems to be skating in sand. I don't know if he's conserving himself for the playoffs, but to me he has been bad.
Lewis just is what he is. What you see is what you get. Plays die on his stick, but I don't see many issues with his play.
To me after a few games Jarkrok hasn't really looked like a centre. Hopefully he adjusts a bit better, but if I had it my way i'd move Monahan up and move Jarkrok to the wing.

I agree, I think Jarnkrok will fit better on RW. Coleman-Backlund-Jarnkrok would probably look quite excellent. Allows us to try one Righty on each top 9 line as well. Sit Monahan for a game, then see how Mangi-Monahan-Toffoli looks one more time.

With back to back home games with no time to practice my guess is both those guys get in for a game.
And given Monahan’s history virtually every year, he’s likely nursing some sort of injury at this point too.

Finally Monahan gets a well deserved healthy scratch.
There is no player on this roster that deserves to sit more than him. It should have been a long time ago but they were obviously trying to get him some production to make him a trade possibility. Trade deadline over, sit him down.
So excited to see the line up without him on it. Really hope Carpenter has a strong game and cements himself as that 4th line center.

As others have suggested, it wouldn't be surprising if Monahan is back in on Saturday. With 14 capable players, the coaches can implement a merit system where the two weakest performers are switched out after a loss (or noticeably bad play) to generate true competition for spots.
In 1989, Terry Crisp sat McDonald, Peplinski, and Tim Hunter during the playoffs despite them all being captains because they were outperformed by other guys on the roster. It's gotta be really tough on veteran players to experience, but also a sign of a strong team.

I think Lucic should be getting some games off also. He hasn’t looked fresh in a while.

Was an inevitability given the Carpenter acquisition and Monahan’s usage over the course of the season. Went from 3rd line to 4th line, top PP unit to the second unit to no unit this past week, only 9 minutes of ice time on Tuesday. It’s been a slow lead up to this point and it’s probably the right decision for the Flames’ push into/through the playoffs.
I’m sure Monahan will have a good attitude about this decision though. 2 things I cannot question is his attitude and his work ethic. Dude has worked his ass off this season, playing harder then I’ve ever seen him play in the past. No short cuts, no whining and I’m sure he’ll work even harder the next time he’s in. Good team guy. He just simply doesn’t fit the checking style mold that Darryl requires.

Lucic will be an important player come playoff time. I thought he was pretty good in the 2020 playoffs and his physicality and board play will be vital in those tough, stuck in the muck type games. He may a have harder time keeping up in some of the run & gun regular season games, but his heavy style of game is 100% suited for the playoffs.

The other skaters need ice time too. If the Flames go on a deep run, there will be injuries that require call ups. Best to have those call ups having some kind of experience actually playing on the team.

I like Monahan and think he can still contribute in the role he has been given, but he was bad the last game and even $6 million players need to be held accountable.

I'd probably take out Lewis and play either Monahan or Carpenter on the wing... but given how Sutter turned this team around in 1 summer, I'll defer to his judgment. He might just know more than me.

Doesn't Monahan have like 9 ES goals in his last 100+ games?
'How exactly can he contribute?' is my question. He's a good guy people feel sorry for but in terms of results the Flames could dress 11 F / 7 D the rest of the way and never play him once and there would be no impact on results IMO. Just as useless and overpaid as James Neal was but he's a nice guy and we drafted him so lots of people want to defend him I guess

I think Monny is awake but his toolbox is gone for some reason, or his offensive play was always reliant on others creating the play for him. He reminds me a lot of Jonathan Cheechoo once separated from Thornton.
