If they do miss, might be a damn shame for Buffalo that the 1st rounder acquired in the Eichel deal is top ten protected.

Trading the hugely popular Fleury and trading for Eichel with no cap space for him has torn the heart out of the Vegas team, they use to have the best mojo and energy in the league, now they look defeated.
Good!

Buffalo probably hopes they keep it, next years draft looks far better.

Mike Smith.
Mike Smith 50% retained.
Can Mike Smith be 100% retained?

Given how scary a fully healthy Vegas team would be, this is great news to avoid them in the playoffs. I imagine if Vegas was comfortably leading the division, half of this place would be screaming about injury cap loopholes.

This Vegas season has 17-18 Flames written all over it. In a playoff position pretty much all year, but then blow up right at the end due to injuries. If memory serves, the Flames lost Matthew Tkachuk and Mike Smith among others and Vegas lost their power forward Mark Stone and now Lehner. The Flames didn’t have much puck luck that season and I don’t think Vegas has had much this season either. Both teams traded away their 1st too. Lots of parallels.
Either way, wouldn’t be sad to see them go. Having to play in T-Mobile 3 times would be nightmarish.

100m team would be scary, looks like karma will take care of it though

Take that Vegas, that's what you get for rigging the breakaway challenge

My only concern is this might allow the Oilers back in the playoffs

I wonder if Lehner on ltir is more for Stone coming back early? Things aren’t panning out as planned and they are very likely to miss the playoffs now.
Tampa is clearly a better team as it isn’t easy to just sit your best forward and still win your division

Proposal:
Salary Cap stays in place throughout regular season and playoffs, however:
- Teams currently in the playoffs, during the playoffs, are allowed to borrow up to 5% of the following year's upper limit to increase their current-season cap space - which can only spent on players currently in your system
- Players that are called up to the NHL roster only count against the cap if they are on a one-way contract (they do not have to clear waivers during the playoffs)
- Players that are called up to the NHL roster on two-way contracts do not count against the cap
Using the projected 22-23 upper limit (82.5M) as an example, teams would be able to borrow up to 4.125M against it and apply it to their 21-22 upper limit for the duration of their playoff participation. That money could then be spent on one-way contracts called up to the NHL roster. Teams would also be able to call up two-way contracts at no cost towards their cap. Teams that borrow against next season's upper limit would start that next season with their upper limit reduced by the borrowed amount.
I call this proposal "Injury protection for the playoffs, without being allowed to magically dress a $100M roster for opening faceoff on day one"
