I have no idea what San Jose's plan is but Hertl is a good player and will play well for them

How convenient how that Kane situation played out. This league is slimy.

I don't think so. I still think both sign for 9.75.

Why should they? Because it is good for the Calgary Flames (or pick any other team)'s chances in the playoffs? They have a bona fide elite player who likes it there and is willing to play there for 8 more years. Why would they want to let him go for picks and change?

It seems like a decent contract. However, I don't see the Sharks competing for anything until the 27-28 season. That's when Karlsson expires. In 26-27 they would still be paying Karlsson $11.5M, as well as $8M to a 37 year old Logan Couture. I expect things to get worse before they get better in SJ, unless some of their big ticket players go on LTIRetirment.

That's optimistic. Perhaps you could sign Chucky for that amount, but Johnny likely commands more.

Also...look at the splits between Meier + Hertl.
Really seems like Meier might be the one stirring the drink between those two. Hertl's numbers are ugly away from Meier this season at least.

Hertl had a ton of control - just a 3 team list. And any team that I can think of who he’d list wouldn’t need him or couldn’t afford him at the moment.
Which leaves them the choice of negotiating a decent deal or losing him. They still may be able to move him depending on trade conditions.

SJ will never win. The city is too nice, and the players like living there too much. It makes it much, much more difficult to unload them in critical situations like this one, which will prevent the Sharks from rebuilding properly.

Hertl is a good player, but this contract is too long for too much.
He definitely won't be worth $8M at age 37, and likely bring that value for several years before that.
I see the $8-9M+ range for players that make a difference on their respective teams, and the way SJ has been performing for the past several years, while he might be the top-scorer, he's not the one who is leading the team to sucess, unlike, say, a Tkachuk or Gaudreau.
Country club atmosphere indeed.

He won't turn 37 until the fall after this contract ends, but I hear your point.
SJ is almost certainly doomed whatever they do. They might as well chase it for a few more years before bottoming out.

Chase what? They are already a bottom-third team in the NHL, and will not be getting any better any time soon. The Sharks have $35 m committed to four players: all of whom are between 31-37 years old, signed for between 4-6 more years, and two of which also have NMCs.

SJ seems like it’s content to sell tickets, be semi-competitive and just exist for a few years. They must figure their fans are invested enough to watch but not enough to complain.

Chase perpetual round 2 exits for some playoff revenue.
