I have had three dogs in the past (each named by family members) and two were "human" names and one was a "dog specific" name. I can't say that I really care either way. Just wanted a cool sounding name for him cause I don't think what I would choose ( ie- "puppy" or something equal to that) is good enough.
As for choosing something specific to my likes and such, i have been combing through some of my favourite books and movies for a good name. I already went through the LOTR trilogy and almost settled on Pippin. But it just doesn't seem tough enough for a dog. I want a strong name for him.

It's Cornelius Quinton IV (we call him Quinton)
In the future, I'm hoping for 3 pugs:
Ampersand,
Apostrophe,
Asterisk

You might also consider your heritage for name inspiration. For example my family emigrated from Scotland so a gaelic (anglicized or not) name was appealing when I was thinking about it. There are a ton of websites with stuff like this on them so you might want to browse around.

I have a Golden Lab (Yellow Lab - Golden Retriever mix) and his name is Iggy.
The only negatives are:
- Really young kids seem to end up pronouncing it Icky.
- People who don't know me as a HUGE Flames fan (such as people in the park on a walk) always think he's named after of Iggy Pop.
Conclusion: Iggy = BEST DOG NAME EVER!
P.S. - My next dog is already going to be named Kipper.
