I have fond memories as my wife and I had gotten married a few days earlier and we had returned from Banff just as the puck dropped on the gold metal game. Shortly thereafter I wore a Roots shirt celebrating the win all around Japan where we travelled on our honeymoon.
That play by Lemiuex to fake a shot and allow the puck through to Kariya stands out as one of the highest hockey IQ plays I have ever seen. He was my favourite player growing up and that play absolutely blew my mind.
Had to re-watch it -- great call by Bob Cole as well to immediate recognize that Lemieux purposely faked the shot in order to set up Kariya.
Part of me also thinks that if Lemieux had sold it any harder, that Kariya might not have been expecting the puck to come through. Just unreal.
Watched this game at a bar in Costa Rica. There were about 100 Canadians, and 2 Americans. With each goal scored the ladies painted maple leaf tattoos on everyone. By the end of the game at about 2 in the afternoon or whatever it was, the entire bar was jackhammered and we spilt out of the place into the streets, creating what was likely the most feeble attempt at a parade in history.
One of the best experiences I have ever had

I had stopped following hockey in the nineties for various reasons. My roommates at the time invited a bunch of people over for the game. I remember recognizing a few names — the Flames from the cup team, Lemieux obviously. I recognized Joe Sakic, Brendan Shanahan, Mike Modano — I think they'd all just been kids when I'd stopped paying attention. And then there were a whole lot of guys I didn't recognize, especially on the American team. Tony Amonte? Keith Tkachuk? Who were these guys?
That game was the first time I saw Iginla play, and it completely re-awoke the hockey fan in me. What a game.
Seeing Iginla out muscle Sutter for the 2nd goal was extra sweet. I know he played for the Flames, but that was before my time and after what he did to Kariya in 98 I never forgave him. That cheap shot probably cost us a Gold in 98 as well.
Thanks for posting this, especially with how much the world is a mess these days.
I remember watching that game with my Dad when I was 17. He was recovering from cancer surgery and passed away a few months later. It's one of those great memories that I have of him, and one of the reasons why I'll never forget that game.

He may not be well like here but nobody can discount the effect Gretzky’s speech to the media had on the team. Completely turned it into an us vs the world mentality and reframed the entire tournament. At one point there it seemed like the greatest team ever assembled was gonna face plant. Lost to Sweden, tied the Czechs, barely beat Germany.

I was playing PWAA that year and we drove up early to our game in Strathmore. We went up top there with the team we were about to play along with parents and other assorted people and we all watched it together. It was such a fun atmosphere before going to play a game against those same kids. I remember that they had one of those massive projector tv's there for everyone to see.
I very clearly remember 2002 and 2010 but couldn’t remember 2006 so I looked it up. Canada finished 7th (!!!) with an NHL all-star team, their worst result in the history of Olympic hockey. What happened?

Way to many "character" guys selected over skilled players. Yeah you need one or two guys who will play the heavy game and PK and such. But in a tournament like the Oly's are and on big ice, you need the most skill you can gather and let them loose.
Ryam Smith, Kris Draper, Shane Doan instead of Sid, Staal and Spezza as an example.
Guess who was in charge of it all though?
He of two-tiered fandom himself....Kevin Lowe.
Self explanatory at that point really.

Thanks for posting. I was at the Maple Leaf in Covent Garden when I lived there. Place was heaving. Drinking strange tasting Molson. Hugging and kissing random people. The energy in there of Canadians coming to one place to watch was so cool. And a lonely yank fan wearing his jersey came into the washroom and yelled "U S A U S A". We all turned and looked at him and broke out laughing simultaneously.
2002 was such a great year. No kids yet, and my wife and I lived just up the street from Semiamoo Beach in White Rock. We walked down to the Sandpiper Pub to grab fish n' chips, and then watched the game.

I remember having to play a hockey game shortly after at Centennial. Parents rented out a team room where we watched it, it was a great time. Also remember watching the Belarus game in the school gym.
With the way the women's game went before it, just added to it all. A hell of a year.
