Monahan for chips that can moved to Buffalo and clear cap for Eichel just makes too much sense. It's out of conference also.

Ottawa has overpaid for underwhelming players in recent years too. Maybe you can recoup half of what would ultimately make up the eichel package

What sort of Chips is Monahan worth currently though. I don’t see Sens trading their first.

If we’re bargaining for chips, Paqui Ghost Pepper tortillas or GTFO

Calgary needs help at centre because Monny is no longer very good.

I doubt he’s the answer for Ottawa.

Monahan is inching closer and closer to cap dump territory. Can’t see him having all that much value if he doesn’t pick it up in a hurry.

Boring Sean Monahan would be traded for Lays Classic.

I think Ottawa has some great pieces, but unfortunately they are mostly Centers, and I doubt they would part with those pieces for Mony. Batherson is a very good winger with size and skill, Pinto will most certainly be a top-6 C in time, and they certainly won't give up Norris. Formenton is good, but probably won't be a top-6 player. There's also Ridly Greig, and D Lassi Thompson, but they need seasoning.

Picking up three middle of the road (but with potential) prospects, like Thompson, Formenton and a second, would make me much more comfortable in giving up higher end prospects like Valimaki and Pelletier in an Eichel trade. It would be a downgrade on prospects instead of a pure sell, and honestly you never really know what a ceiling is until you reach it.

I really don't know if it's rose coloured glasses but this seems like a good scenario for all parties involved IMO.

Calgary trades Monahan for 1st Round, a prospect, and a serviceable bottom 6 forward or top 6 defenseman.

Calgary trades conditional 1st Round (higher pick of Calgary-Ottawa lottery protected) + Ottawa Prospect + Zary + Kylington/Anderson

That to me gets it done while Calgary keeps a functional line up.

It is hard to see Treliving doing something like this unless it is back to back with an Eichel deal. He’s adamant he doesn’t want to make a deal that doesn’t improve the team. But I think we can all agree adding Eichel makes the team better long term, notwithstanding the period where he has surgery and recovers. The question is can he live with subtracting Monahan for a few months while Eichel has surgery? I think if you take Tierney back as part of the deal, you can bump Backlund up to 2nd line and Tierney takes 3rd line duties without missing much of a beat. Framework for the deal is there and it appears to makes sense.

Could Ottawa retain some of Eichel's salary as well in a 3-way deal?

They will have to retain for the entire five years. Seems excessive. They might be open to pick up some salary in the form of a cap dump from Calgary, though.
