Wow, Kessel looks well and truly finished. He cannot skate at all anymore, and has nothing to add on the ice. I know he was battling an injury in training camp, but this is beyond bad. I wonder if he even finishes this last year of his contract.

He was very productive last year but it was entirely PP-based. We'll something similar this year, I think.

Also, just on a side note, one has to marvel at the Coyotes' commitment to tanking. They've clearly designed this team to be horrible in the expectation of a top 3 pick.
They have three forwards signed beyond this season: Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz long term and Ladd for one more year.
They have 2 regular defensemen signed beyond this season: Chychrun long term and Gostisbehere for one more year.
The draft picks they've acquired have been insane:
In next year's draft they have 8 picks in the first two rounds, 3 in the first round alone, one of them guaranteed to be a high pick (their own). 12 picks in total for the draft. Honestly, I think they plan to draft guys and put them straight into the NHL to fill out their roster.
They also have extra picks 2023 and 24 that they can use to trade for some established NHLers to fill out the roster. 4 in total.
They will also have over $50 million in cap space to sign players next year. Yes, you heard that right, $50 million in cap space, not 10, or 20, or 30, or even 40 million, which would be insane, but yes, $50 million.
Now, that being said, they have 5 skaters and no goalies, so they're going to have to sign a crazy amount of free agents, or make some trades with their draft capital. It's going to be interesting with guys like these not signed for next season and possibly available: Malkin, Giroux, Laine, Letang, M.A. Fleury, Bergeron, Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Giordano, Radulov, F. Forsberg, Hertl, Ristolainen, Palat, Domi, Niedereitter, Rielly, Trocheck, Kadri, Kuemper,
Seriously, if you had the available cap, and if even half of those guys become available, you could make a pretty good team overnight. Add in some good draft picks all coming in at once, and the team could be dangerous within 2 years.
What's so strange for a team this bad is that they have nothing coming in the pipeline either. I don't see any prospect that I even recognize, nevermind any blue chippers. Obviously this is why they decided to start from scratch and draft like crazy this year.
Just curious what everyone else thinks of their "burn it to the ground" strategy. It might be what we're looking at in a year or two.
Just a bizarre, bizarre team right now.

I've been banging this drum all summer. Their offseason has been spectacular to watch.
If this whole thing comes together ... if they can get that crazy complex they have planned in Tempe actually off the ground ... then I think they could be *really* good.
The only question really is, where are they gonna play? They've been kicked out of Glendale after this year. Do they play in Chase Field, like the Bolts in the Trop or the Raptors in the Skydome?

I just think it's an incredibly risky strategy. Outside of 3 players, there's nothing resembling a core of a franchise to build on. I would only really be excited about one of those players: Chychrun. The others are good players, but not elite at all.
They're really banking on hitting a homerun on all their picks and also signing some big named free agents. There's no guarantee for either of those things to happen, so they could be looking like this for a long time. I just think they need to trade for a buried young star or two on a team up against the cap, but I can't think of anyone like that right now. I guess they could probably get Laine, but even he isn't an elite player overall.
Just so, so risky.

They're unabashedly trying to get Wright, Bedard, or Michkov. Those guys could be franchise-changers.
Don't write off Dylan Guenther, either. Love that guy.

Cozens has been terrible for the Sabres today. Really looks amateurish out there. Unexpected.

When did that happen?

Cap dump in the off season for picks. Kinda like Ghostisbear playing there and Loui Erickson

Sabres win it 2-1 in a shootout. Vejmelka the best player for either team, though. He was outstanding in net for AZ.

It was a matter of time but Buffalo playing much better. They have had some good names on paper in recent years drafting high picks and have never seemed to put it together. So far they're looking alright.

And by that time they’ll throw all the money they can at Austin Matthews as a free agent to come play for his hometown. Almost like they are timing it perfectly.

I hate the Coyotes so much.
There shouldn’t be a team that functions primarily as dumping ground for bad contracts.
Much less one that prevents the residents of its city from having adequate access to EMS and libraries.
Or touts one of the expected benefits of its proposed arena deal as “returning water to the desert”.

I have to say, the notion that Auston Matthews is going to leave a crown jewel franchise poised to contend for the next decade with elite centre depth, skill on the wings, a stable of mobile puck-movers and solid-at-worst goaltending for the friggen Arizona Coyotes is laughable.

He spends his off-seasons at home, so you can't underestimate the home factor. Especially if they throw the bag at him in a favorable tax situation. Can't write the possibility off. I'm sure it offers a much nicer lifestyle than the colder winters of anywhere up north.

Also by then you're potentially looking at an Arizona team with a mature Chychrun, Guenther, Soderstrom, Keller, and one of the upcoming generational kids (Bedard/Michkov/Wright).
I could see the appeal.

He might leave Toronto.
He’s not going to Arizona when he could go to Vegas. Or Tampa. Or even the Panthers.
It would be a waste of his gifts.
