You could also hear his story about the mom vs Hawerchuk from Mangi on Mareks 32 thoughts podcast from last week.

The Athletic should probably raise their prices. There seems to be a limited amount of people willing to pay for any online content. The ones who love the content, and are willing to pay, probably wouldn't think twice for $2/month.

Yes, I also find that the best way to get more people to buy your product is to make it more expensive.

Keeping it dirt cheap isn't working either, might as well try to get a bit more from the existing customer base and offer free trials occasionally. It works for other industries.

I was subscribed for 1.5yrs and recently unsubscribed.
I felt like at the end of the day, the news an analysis I got from this site was better than the Flames content there which primarily consists of one writer doing standard fluff pieces.
Eric D is great...I enjoyed Kent Wilson (and no I don't want to hear about how much you dislike him) and I enjoy the overall prospect rating and analysis...aside from that, I didn't feel like I got much out of it TBH.

I used to subscribe to the Athletic but found I was only reading a few articles every few months so the value wasn't there for me. I would pay by the article if I had the choice, though.
Edit: should also add that I find most of my news on CP so I'm silently praying that Bingo doesn't all of a sudden start charging a monthly fee... Actually I'd pay, this site is the best.

I did unsubscribe recently too, but got a pretty good offer for a year, so did that. Like their coverage and during the year, they had been my go to for articles. Barely visited TSN or sportsnet during the year

I did the athletic subscription for a year. Was good for situations like these but quite rare on the flames content.

I unsubscribed after having a subscription for 2 years.
The first year was enjoyable but that appeal quickly wore off once I started seeing through the quality of their articles.
Nowadays The Athletic seems to have catchy or 'click-baity' headlines with fluff for content. They realistically only seem to produce 5 really good articles in a season for the Flames.
IMO, The Athletic is simply not worth it for following the NHL.

The Athletic charges $2/ month?
Since when? I’ve been paying $70/ year and the Auto renew feature is annoying. It might be better for business if they gave you an option to renew. No warning of your subscription expiring.. even Costco reminds you in a email.
I changed my credit card information and got 5, yes 5 emails from the Athletic telling me they couldn’t process my subscription. That’s the only time I’ve ever heard from them!
I enjoy the content, however I would pay $2/ month if they offered it to me…

Is it actually $12/year?
5 great articles plus less intellectual, time killing type stuff?
Seems pretty reasonable. Most people will spend more on beer and snacks to watch a single game on tv

I guess it depends on what you are looking for! I'm in the same boat as the user above. Initially started with a $24/yr subscription which was awesome so I felt the value was there.
Come renewal, they automatically processed a $70 charge on my account for the following year all while advertising to me directly in emails that my renewal would be processed at the same rate. It's just annoying stuff like this that I'd rather not have to deal with, and I don't deal with through other subscription based services.
That's like signing up for Netflix at $8 a month, and then seeing your subscription go to $20 a month without anyone telling you. Not a fan of this business practice.

From their subscription page:
"$1/month for 6 months. $9.99/month thereafter."

$10 a month is nothing. That's what you tip the waitress when you go out. It's less than a 6 pack. It's like 5 chocolate bars lol

I don't pay $10 a month to read the Calgary Herald, and they pump out more articles on the Flames + all relevant Calgary area news.
$10 a month might be 'nothing', but $10 a month to every single subscription service starts to add up real fast. You can get a new car on lease for like $300 a month lol.
I just think they should be better priced or at least have an option to pay less to only read the articles from the few teams you actually do follow.

They are trying to sustain the creation of the content.
I'll pay $10 a month so I can read Eric D. Nothing in the Herald or Sun is a substitute for him. Add in folks like Down goes Brown and Pronman (who I do enjoy) and it's great value.

I miss Craig Morgan's Coyotes content but I agree with Jiri, it's a great subscription to have if you're really interested in the league as a whole. Like a souped-up Hockey News. Plus you get all the other leagues, too.

They have solid Blue Jay coverage as well ... so for me it's a no brainer.
I'd add Wheeler's stuff as must read prospect/draft coverage.

When it comes to prospects I like hearing different POVs rather than the same lists. So I enjoy the differing opinions between Pronman and Wheeler. Pronman's podcast is also enjoyable. He is a more humble individual about his evaluations than his written work sometimes reflects. He's very aware of what he knows and doesn't know.
