I doubt other owners are too happy to see the structure of that contract. Barkov is about as safe of a bet as you can make, but salary at only $1M with those huge signing bonuses every season is a structure that top players are going to be demanding all over.

As for how this impacts Gaudreau and Tkachuk, it's true that its apples to oranges. However, with Kucherov and Landeskog locked in at sub $10M contracts, you would think that Gaudreau or Tkachuk would have to have monster seasons to even be close to an 8 figure AAV.

You are assuming that each would sign in Calgary for their perceived value. That may be true, but it might take a huge over payment for them to sign in Calgary.

I guess so. There isn't much of a history of Flames players re-signing here for large overpayments, so I guess I am just waiting and seeing until that actually happens. I remember many on this board stating that Gio wouldn't re-sign here for less than $9M and every year that UFAs won't come here.

Then again, I was pretty confident Johnny would be extended this summer. Unlike the Panthers, the Flames aren't clearly trending in a positive direction so UFA status has to be more appealing than it would be otherwise.

Low salary and high signing bonuses for star players has been a thing for about five years now. I'm not sure who started it, (Maybe Voracek?) but it became the norm very quickly.

True, they have been around but take Brayden Point's contract for example: the bonuses are between 4.2M and 7M.

Kucherov has one year with an 11M SB and one with 8M then between 4 and 5 for the rest.

Landeskog only got 1M 1 year and the rest salary.

I could be wrong but this is the first time I have seen such an imbalance towards bonuses.

While not the first one, Auston Matthews base salary is league minimum. Starting at $700,000 when first signed and going up to $775,000 by 2024. His signing bonuses are as high as $15,200,000.

The funny thing there is that both he and Marner got dinged by escrow, since their highest total salary years were the highest escrow years.

There was every thought that Gio preferred staying in Calgary over leaving.

I don’t think that either Johnny or Tkachuk are essentially tied to Calgary.
