Guess the Pens' tanking started in 2002 entry draft as follows:
2002 - Ryan Whitney - 5th overall
2003 - MAF - 1st overall
2004 - Malkin - 2nd overall
2005 - Crosby - 1st overall
2006 - Jordan Stall - 2nd overall
- How can you top that? Oilers and Sabres tried to replicate that and failed big time. However, as much as anyone here hates it, the Oilers did come close to replicating what the Pens have done by getting Draisaitl and then winning the lottery with McDavid. You knew the Sabres were gunning for McDavid as with many other teams. The look on the Sabres owner and GM's faces said it all. It's too bad as well for Ted Nolan, who coached the Sabres through the 2014-2015 season only to be fired for not wanting to tank but was told to do so for the sake of high possibility of getting McDavid or the consolation prize, Eichel.
Can you imagine if, instead of going to the playoffs that year, the Flames tanked and gotten either McDavid or Eichel? Frick, we wouldn't have a super thread talking about trading away Monahan or Tkachuk and giving away 4 other 1st rounders for Eichel! We'd pretty much had him for free and the Flames franchise would've made huge money selling Eichel jerseys! Opportunities lost in back to back years when they're rebuilding!
