Valimaki salary breakdown:
$1.1 million in year one
$2.0 million in year two
$3.1 million total for a $1.55 million AAV.
He’ll be RFA with arbitration rights at the end of the deal. #Flames
So what's his QO after this deal is year 2 is 2m?

I wonder if these signings mean Tre has said F it and is out of the race for Eichel.

I thought they recently changed that rule so now the players QO is the average of his salary aka cap hit

No bearing on the pursuit of Eichel. I mean, they were going to sign their RFAs no matter what.

Great news . What a journey this young man has been through.
I really like this player ....I think he'll be a Norris candidate in all honesty.
As Stephon on SNL says it.....this player has it all.
Size, speed, peripheral vision and his team mates like him.
He adds allot and i am glad he's healthy and still a flame.

This deal is fine. Upside with little downside.

It’s a fine contract. Hopefully Valimaki takes a few steps this upcoming season.

Even if Treliving leaves $4M in his pocket (HIGHLY unlikely IMO), Gawdin won't be in the lineup.
Lucic - Lewis - Ritchie
is far more likely.

Slightly high but at 2 years seems like fair value. Now let's hope he can stay healthy

I actually think this is really good. But it's amazing how much the "high end" RFA d-men get paid compared to the ones who haven't established themselves yet. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be a huge bargain in year 2.

valimaki was pretty bad last year. I don't understand the AAV at all. Just seems to be a first round pick / percieved upside premium.

The cap hit doesn’t matter, Sabres have plenty of cap space.

Works both ways. When we trade for Eichel, and he's forced to retire immediately, both teams are totally fine.

I still have high hopes for this kid. I have a feeling year 1 will be another learning year but he'll break out in year 2 in time for his new contract. The kid is going to be a player.

Cal Foote in exactly the same draft and and same RFA status just signed for 2x 850K
Logan Stanley protected by the Jets in the expansion draft and coming off his ELC 2x 900k
Magniapane coming off his elc $715K and 70K in the minors.
Maybe Valimaki was going to play back in the Liiga he dominated?

Jake Bean, another comparable, signed for 3 years at 2.333 mill. Still an RFA at the end.
However 2.3 seems like a bit much for Valimaki at this point. Bean is a year ahead of Valimaki in terms of development (2 years if you include Vali's injury).
Bean is 4 months older than Valimaki, drafted in a similar spot (a year before), and had almost exactly the same production this year.

Not a great year for Valimaki, for sure.
On a positive note, I did read an article earlier this year, think it was in The Athletic, that stated for major knee surgeries it will take an athlete a full year after the recovery to get back to where they were pre-injury. In other words, it’s two years to get back to where you were. The article stated this was often the case regardless of the sport, football being named specifically.
So, let’s hope this is the case and Valimaki picks up on where he left off in 19/20.

I like this contract because of the second year.
He’s going to get a real chance, so it’s likely his second year may well be a bargain.

He’s gonna be a stud, I have no doubt.
It frustrates me seeing the doubters, even if it is justifiable in some ways.
This kid looked years ahead of his time before he got injured.
