Well that's one way to save a little against the cap in return for giving the guy a hedge against the economic cost of being sent down.

if Kylington spends much time in the AHL this year, I'm sure we won't be seeing him again.

To me, he is almost the same player as Brett Kulak. Similar strengths and weaknesses. I think he could be an every day NHLer if the meta in the NHL shifts to having 3 lines of puck moving D. Right now, I think most teams are looking for a bottom pairing with lots of sandpaper. And your puck-moving D better also be able to chip in offensively.

Sound like Kylington bet himself to be a AHLer

He won't make much less in the AHL vs playing in the NHL this season. No escrow in the minors

This actually strikes me as a smart move by Kylington and his agent. Minimum NHL salary makes him easy to keep on the roster, high AHL salary reduces the cash savings from sending him down. I'm thinking this year he probably sticks, even if it is as the 7th D.

Clearly the last domino that needed to fall.

Give this kid a legit chance to play each night:

Hanifin-Tanev
Zadorov-Andersson
Valimaki-Kylington
Mackey

Kylington bet on himself to be a Flame, because he knows Treliving is a jerk with negotiations (see: Kulak, who fought hard for a 1 way contract and was thus moved out immediately out of petulance)

All he did was make it more economical to be in the NHL over a higher priced replacement level player while making it uneconomical to keep him in the AHL.

This is true. But I hope we’re not making decisions on icing the best team based on $50K.

If Kylington shows that he deserves to be in the NHL, I hope it wouldn’t make a difference whether he was playing on his QO or this deal.

These situations are weird. Kind of sets himself up to be the press box guy.

This won't be the only factor, but it will be a factor. Especially if the choice between Kylington and Mackey is no more tha n a coin flip, then the team is going to save that money.

From reading the thread, I can now see the rationale for him being the seventh guy. He's not really going to improve much playing in Stockton again.

It would be great for the team if he can put it all together for sure.

I guess it depends what they want from the 3rd pairing guys...if its some offense OK will get time, if its a steadier defense guy i think Mackey gets that spot.

It’s a Sutter team. Olli better figure out how to work the popcorn machine.

Bottom line is that Kylington needs to be able to play NHL-level defence if he wants to be an NHL defenceman. If Sutter can’t do it then I don’t see him having much of a future here, which is too bad because I think there is still some good potential there. He’s still only 24.

Really? I saw it the other way. Treliving didn't see him as part of the team and traded him to give him another opportunity elsewhere. Gio, Brodie, Hanifin, Hamonic, Andersson, Stone, Valamaki, and Kylington were on the roster to start the year.

He’s unique in that I can’t remember the last time I was this attached to a tweener. Maybe because of his skating, or his interesting heritage (Eritrean descent). Or maybe I just saw so much potential.

The only tweener I remember being this big a fan of was maybe Sieloff or Baertschi.

I’m rooting hard for Kylington to become an everyday NHLer for the Flames and I look forward to his next work out hype video.

That was the same year Treliving gave up assets for Forbort and Gustafsson to shore up LD.

The real situation was this:

Kulak wanted 1.1M 1-way
Tre wanted 500k 2-way

Arbitrator hands Kulak 900k 1-way

Tre is pissed, and first waives Kulak in the offseason (bizarre, unusual move) to make an example of him, and then trades Kulak in preseason to Montreal basically to say to everyone else "if the team has a bad year and you want to get paid, GTFO"

Petulance at its finest.
