If you take away Hart's historically bad season, which is kinda fair honestly, his GSAA of 11.5 in 74 games still falls well short of Shesterkin's numbers.
Plus Shesterkin dominated overseas and had massive hype for years before coming to the NHL, so it's not like it's a risky bet on someone who came out of nowhere.

That's nice.
Its still a stupid amount of money for a guy who has proven squat at the NHL level.

Tough to exactly compare but I think it’s very much like signing a younger Vaz to a similar 4 year deal. He signed a 3 yr deal and then got paid the 4th year. This is a bit higher, closer to 7% of the cap than Vaz’s under 5%, but it’s not completely insane. Edit and Vaz is now 11.67% of the cap.

"Stupid amount". Lol.
If he puts up the same numbers he has hist first 2 seasons, it's a steal.
If he puts up slight worse numbers than he has, it's a fair deal.
This has the potential to be an incredible bargain for New York, which is probably what they're betting on.
Long gone are the days players are paid based on their past success. Young players are now paid based on what they've done and what they're expected to do.

What "seasons"?
He hasnt even played as many games in his career as an average starter does in one year, but feel free to make stuff up.
Maybe he lives up to it, maybe its Koskinen all over.
Its a stupid contract.

Especially for a team that needs to be starting to pinch pennies anywhere they can with some of the contracts they have coming up.

Shesterkin’s contract had expired, so he needed a new one
I’ve got good news. Johnny is under contract for next year

Played the 12th most games among goalies last year and had the 9th best GSAA/60 among goalies who played at least half the season.
His new contract currently places him as the 12th highest paid goalie.
Anywhere close to his numbers is well worth the contract, if not makes the contract a bargain.
He's young, with incredible past results, with massive hype before that. You can disagree with paying a young-ish player with a non-full season of results that kind of money, but calling it a "stupid contract" reeks of ignorance and stupidity itself

Signing a goalie to this type of contract after one good season has been a disaster for many teams. Hopefully it's the same for the Rangers.

Disagree. Shesterkin has tore up every league he's been in. I am positive this contract will age well. If not, well, it was only for 4 seasons.

It's unconventional to give a goal tender this type of money on a second contract. Than again, 9 million plus per year defenceman were pretty rare prior to this offseason too.
Most indicators are that Shesterkin looks to be on track to become an elite goaltender.
It's the Rangers so I hope he finds a way to make DeAngelo look like a Saint and force the Rangers to buy him out. But I don't think I'll get my wish here.
Oddly enough, despite denying the 94 Canucks the Stanley Cup I just don't have any level of admiration for the Rangers the way I do for teams like the Islanders, Hurricanes or Bruins.

I don't think the Canes ever beat the Canucks. Wasn't that the Oilers?

This contract will not age poorly. And even on the slim chance it does, they would still be able to trade him for positive value given his age (just like Hart)

That's right, to me the Oilers, Canucks losing is second in importance to Flames wins.
It's bad enough that the Oilers have as many cups as they do. So yes I'm thankful that the Canes and Islanders at least stopped them from winning two more. Maybe because the 94 Rangers had so many ex Oilers is why I still hate that team to this day despite them denying the Canucks.

Update: you were right. It is a stupid contract. God awful really... for Shesterkin.
----
Had to bump this thread. This is literally ridiculous...
I always knew his contract was going to be an absolute steal, but my god it's worth like 1/3 of what it actually should be.
Shesterkin is statistically having one of the best seasons EVER by a goaltender.
In 37 games:
- 1st in SV% (.942 - Husso is second at .930)
- 1st in GAA (1.93 - Swayman is second at 2.03)
- 1st in GSAA (39.99 - Andersen is second at 21.67 )
- 1st in GSAA/60 (1.10 - Husso is second at .68 )
- 1st in HDSS (.886 - Husso is second at .864)
Shesterkin has literally been almost twice as good as the second best goalie in the NHL this season. His contract is an absolute joke and is BAR NONE the best contract in the NHL (sorry Lindholm).
He's literally saving over a goal a game. That is UNHEARD of.
For context, even if you add up the GSAA of Vasilevskiy's last 2 seasons (35.8 in 84 games), it still doesn't even come close to comparing to what Shesterkin has done in 37 games. It's almost laughable how unbelievable that is.
There should be no debate whatsoever who the MVP is this season. It'll probably go to a forward like usual, but that would make for one of the biggest snubs ever. Without Shesterkin, the Rangers are on the outside looking in.
As of right now, we are witnessing one of the greatest goaltending performances in NHL history, and that's not even being the least bit exaggerating.

^^^ I’ll be honest, I had no idea he’s been THAT dominant. Maybe Markstrom, even with the 8 shutouts, isn’t in the conversation after all
I’d be super curious to know, just how much better Shesterkins numbers would look without 2 really ugly losses to the Flames this year. I think those 2 memories cloud my own judgement on his dominance, but it appears they are basically his only bad games this season lol

Shesterkin is legitimately having one of the greatest seasons by a goaltender in NHL history. It's bonkers. He should receive every single first-place vote for the Vezina.

The Rangers have had a pretty good run of finding franchise goaltenders over the decades. Going back to the 80's they have gone from Vanbiesbrouck, Richter, Lundqvist, and now Shesterkin.

Honestly, based on what Shesterkin has done this season - he could conceivably win the Vezina AND the Hart, this seems very smart by the Rangers.
