They take him and keep him.

Maybe sign him to a one year deal after that.

Certainly a destination Gio would agree to since thats where he lives in the summer.

If Seattle takes Dermott it becomes a lot more plausible too.

IMO Seattle looks at McCann before Dermott.

Their salary floor is about $49m

Quote:
Seattle must choose a minimum of 20 players under contract for the 2021-22 regular season. Those contracts must have an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100 percent of the prior season’s upper limit for the salary cap. That limit was $81.5 million.

No way Toronto traded for McCann without making a side deal with Seattle to not take him

I think they traded for him so they would be left with one of kerfoot or McCann.

Giordano’s story is really awesome and he’s obviously outlived any realistic expectation you could have of him.

That said, he’s a big (I’d argue biggest) part of the problem the team has had in the past 4 years in not being able to live up to higher expectations. He’ll never clear the tire marks Mackinnon left on him in 2019. It’s time for him to move on.

OVIU is a UFA and expected to sign with Washington. It's likely not done so as to not take up a protection spot.

Gio is the less risky of the high priced guys, as both Tarasenko and Price come with both term and risk.

My bet is still they take Derek Ryan, especially to offset the other big contracts they may take, like Price and Landeskog.

Tarasenko is only 2 more years, I think they have to take him and see what happens

Couldn’t they just sign him? I guess the same thing could’ve been said about Engelland. It’s just that this time I think they have Gio.

I think they take Tarasenko, and St Louis is going to use that cap space to sign Landeskog and put him on a line with his buddy O'Reilly

Some teams are so deep that Seattle will have 4 or 5 very good players to choose from. Calgary has 1, who is 38, and on the decline.

Five years ago Vegas had no good signed players to choose off the Flames and had to pick a UFA. Sad state the Flames are in that in five years they really haven’t accumulated much depth

Toronto has a handful of nice players to pick from, but most teams don't have more than 1-2 guys that are all that impressive

Which teams have 4-5 players worth picking between?

I'd wager that Seattle doesn't take Mark Giordano and that the Flames have made a deal with them. They're going to take Derek Ryan or Oliver Kylington instead, maybe Milan Lucic.

If you look at who the Flames left exposed, that's a lot of meh players and they had to put Gio on that list just because he's older maybe. He's arguably still the Flames best player.

Friedman already reported the cost to protect Gio was too high. Does not sound like any side deal to me
