Surprised the Flames weren't in on him. All your 2013 1st rounders will be ours!

Schmidt will have more value post expansion draft because the canucks can afford to protect him, whereas teams that may want him dont want to use the spot up

Yep they do

Beagle if hes healthy will be on the 4th line, also drance said the other day he would have value if he showed he was healthy since hes in the last year of his deal

Getting a 3rd line C allows them to keep Miller on the wing with petterson or horvat

Sutter is not, and Miller as the 3rd line center is not a good use for Miller.

Well then I guess this is a reasonable price to pay for a decent 3C who can't score... provided that Benning can sign him to a reasonable contract.

That's Benning's strength right? Signing free agents to reasonable contracts?

he has better hands than his point totals suggests. He doesn't get a lot of offensive zone starts.

JD is already an upgrade over Sutter, in terms of speed, grit, pking and he's a bit of a pest as well. His point total vs Sutter (who he's replacing) is also better over the last 3 seasons.

Love this deal, he could be playing with Podkolzin next season.

I think this is a great deal for the Canucks. I would think this guy is worth a 2nd or 2x 3rds or something. The odds of getting a 3rd to be as good as Dickinson are very low IMO.

I like Dickinson. I had him going in the expansion draft. Along with Hill and McCann... Teams are making moves which will screw Seattle’s plans (or at least my pretend plans for Seattle).

Seems that having a strong shutdown guy is important for coaching and line matching.

Sutter had Yelle who was not counted on to score and Conroy who could go out against the other teams top line and be counted on to not let them run wild.

Ryan would be sort of that role but was not used as a shut down guy and his WAR def wasn't that good since he got to Calgary. He was a solid WAR def his last year in Carolina. As well Backlund was pretty much done as a shut down guy after 2015-16 (according to WAR def)

Vancouver was in the same boat as Calgary. They had no solid WAR numbers for any forward.

Maybe that is a big reason that McDavid had an aberration of scoring and why when they actually ran into a team that had Lowry being paid to shut people down the Oilers got swept.

This seems like a really good trade for Vancouver. Someone with the same sort of WAR numbers on the offence side would be looking at 4M + Dickinson made 1.5 last year ... He will likely sign for less than 3M.

I guess this would be a moneyball sort of move. Make the team better on the cheap.

PS Magniapane (.44) was 2nd on the Flames in War def was far behind Tanev (1.43) Hanifin the likely #1 LD this coming year was .05 playing mainly with Tanev.

PPS Lindholm may not a #1C .01 on WAR offense .13 on WAR def
