Can't blame a team for going all in, but I am not a fan of paying more for the name on the back of a jersey then for the product they deliver on the ice.
Once most teams’ best players hit the wall, they’ll go through 5 years of being non-competitive.
It’s just that with the Sharks, you know there is zero chance of them turning it around.
Wilson would have seen this day coming.

Agree. And he would do it all again given the chance. The team was one of the top teams for a long long time. They fell short of the goal, but he gave them chance after chance. His deals lately have been less than stellar (Kane, Karlsson), but he has more than his fair share of great trades too (Burns, Thornton, trading up in the draft with conviction to get Couture, recycling Hoffman for some draft picks).
But I don't see any way out of this mess going forward. They are effed for a long long time.
The Sharks went for it knowing they were going to face an ugly 5-10 years and they fell short. A couple good season and runs but ultimately didn't get it done so here comes the pain. Let's see if they go full rebuild or try their luck with an ill-advised retool.

I doubt they expect to be competitive over the next five years. They knew when they signed those contracts they would look bad down then road. But they were willing to make that tradeoff in the hopes of competing for the Cup in the short term. The gamble didn’t pay off.
That Karlsson contract looks ridiculous. Imagine Connor McDavid getting $12.5x8, so you decide to give a 29-year old Karlsson $11.5x8. And that's after you've already committed long-term with Burns and Vlasic at a combined $15M. Salary cap? What salary cap?
Not to mention the whole "handshake deal" with Kevin Labanc to re-sign for only one million. A "win now" move if there ever was one.
The "Fire Wilson" thread on SanJosePuck must be a 1000 pages long by now...
I think San Jose is in the worst spot right now of any NHL team. Although, it's also difficult to be optimistic about Buffalo either. In a vacuum, I'd take Buffalo's roster situation over San Jose's but San Jose is a much cleaner run organization (big understatement?)

Yeah Minnesota is the worst situation and nothing to show for it, much less than San Jose's success. Minnesota is going to have $15m in cap space tied to Parise and Suter in 2023-24 AND 2024-2025. At least Burns, Karlsson and Vlasic will still be on the ice.

That's it.
That is the saddest chart of all time.

I was going to comment on San Jose's inability to win the Cup was due to their reliance for so many years on Joe Thornton as their #1 center. I always said he'll never lead a team to a cup. Then I see that chart and I wished we had Joe Thornton.
San Jose has the most series wins since 2005 with no championship to show for it. Vegas has the 5th most series wins since 2005 out of 21 teams that have not won the Cup. The team has only existed since 2017.
