This could just mean that there is enough good will on both sides that neither is worried or feel that it is pressing. I wouldn't necessarily think it's impending doom.

He hasn’t really have to deal with too many upcoming UFA star
The last big one was Brodie and we all know how that turned out

How many times has Treliving signed a player to an extension during the offseason prior to the final year of his contract?
Gio is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Were there any others?
Even with Gio, the contract wasn't signed until late August as Treliving got his more-pressing work done first.

The team he’s being traded to isn’t on his no trade list. No reason to panic.

I don't think there was ever any serious worry about Gio leaving. I think it's a big mistake not to start negotiating before Gaudreau's NTC kicks in.

Hopefully they are working on their silly walks.

I'm being told this will be reserved for any impasse, in which case both sides will present their dollar amount, and whoever has the most effective silly walk (as decided by the ministry) will have their number written into the contract.
It's all very unserious and highly productive.

And if the Gaudreau camp says ‘let’s wait’?
One party can’t negotiate with itself

Everybody in hockey has an understanding of the general region he’d like to play in if not Calgary. I don’t see how his NTC really changes anything. Teams that are elsewhere aren’t going to blow the bank on him anyway, NTC or not. Teams in the NE USA aren’t going to dial back their offer and risk missing out to a rival because “we don’t need to offer full value because he has a NTC”. It’s pretty much a non factor.

"Let's wait" to me implies "we want to explore all of our options" and should set into motion trade discussions with teams for his services. The organization has to be proactive here. Treliving has dragged his feet the last few offseasons in hopes the core could put it together. They faceplanted this season and it's time to start making changes.

I disagree about it being weak of them to bring her in. I'm an Athletic subscriber and in my opinion the quality of her work on Flames articles has been really high.
On the other hand, you're probably right that she's not much of an insider. It'd be really tough building those relationships after a year of doing zoom press conferences and not being allowed near the team or management.

This type of article screams RicardoW levels of "ground breaking news" to me.
Nothing to see here, this was just to drum up views.

This is not a serious article. That said, IMO the window is really short to nail down a Gaudreau deal before they are pretty much forced to trade him.

Yeah, the Flames are probably going to screw this up just like they screwed up the Brodie asset management situation.
They'll hang onto Gaudreau because they'll be a playoff bubble team, they'll either miss the playoffs or be first round fodder, then he'll walk as a UFA to his childhood team (or an eastern team) and the Flames will be left with jack #### for future assets.
Next up after that will be mismanaging the Tkachuk asset.
Man I hope I'm wrong, but this org really gets a guy jaded.

the rest of the GMs can smell the blood in the water for Treliving. The deals that are being suggested would be solidly and emphatically rejected by CP.
The teams would look at the Flames and wonder which players are the problems and whether they would mess up their locker rooms.
Why would they want to bring players that are suspect in important games onto their teams for a fair value?
On the other hand the option of taking Gio's cap hit and signing Gaudreau and Tkachuk long term to big dollar contracts (likely an overpayment to make them stay) just lock in another 5-6 years of mediocrity ?

This is fine and good, but "let's wait" is also just a hypothetical scenario. Another completely reasonable hypothetical scenario may be that they've chatted, both sides have a rough idea of where the other is at, and believe negotiations shouldn't pose a problem.
We can assume anything we want. Maybe they have been proactive, so proactive that they're already comfortable getting to the "serious" negotiations when they get to them and the other side feels the same.

The Flames arent to only team to underperform and have GM's on the hot seat.
The rest of the league isnt going to collude to ensure Flames don't get 'market' value.
The question is what direction the Flames want to go with the assets. If they are looking to compete this season dealing our best players AND improving this season will be difficult (almost impossible?) - As our assets all have warts coming off last season.

Its just as easy to say that BT knows, generally, what JG's camp wants to stay, but before he commits he wants to see what he can get for him. The price could be well above where BT will go.
I still think he is no longer a Flame in 2 weeks because there will be a lot of interest in him and the possibility of the return in a trade could easily outweigh the return from the player on a contract at XX dollars.

Posters assume his no trade list will consist of the usual teams no one wants to go to, such that he can be dealt to Philly etc.
Often players put on their NT list the most obvious teams that might want him,, leaving a bunch of teams with either no cap or are rebuilding, or understand that Johnny has no intention of signing long term there.
Which effectively means the player has complete control over where he might go. Which is what every player wants.
There is likely 25 or more teams that would have no interest in acquiring Johnny without a contract on place, maybe more. Unless it's for rental prices.
Once his NTC kicks in, Johnny may well have 100% over where he goes., if anywhere.
