I wouldn’t be sad if he was put out to pasture at this point. He’s almost unbearable with his Oilers homerism, and awkward forced puns and jokes all the time.

I’d love for Tim from Tim and Sid to take over as host now that Sid has already moved on.

I'm pretty sure the Twitter mob thinks Ron MacLean made a joke about Kevin Bieksa catching HIV. People's minds too in the gutter.

Does he understand that HNIC isnt a Poetry Slam? And that he wasnt actually a member of the Tragically Hip?

I'd like to see Ron go, but not for that, he's awful, I don't think he has much integrity and is a weasel. There are better people out there then him that could do that job. He should have been shown the door when Cherry was. When he comes on I flip the channel.

I definitely cringed there.

He was making a "you're so gay" joke.

It was unpleasant to watch.

So the TV host made a comment that makes no sense but he’s fine?

“Tarp Off” I understand. I don’t know how you can put a good spin on “positive for something.”

I mean, like I said, surely that can't be what he meant. It can't possibly. No one would be dumb enough to think that was an okay joke to make, much less Ron McLean, who is at the very least experienced enough not to make that type of blunder on the air. It's not like he's some hockey player with no broadcasting experience they plucked out of a locker room.

But... what else could it have meant?

Yeah you really can't be making jokes like that. Cringeworthy and inappropriate.

“If you are an Oiler fanboy, you are definitely positive for something.”

Positive for Stupidity.

Isn’t that what Ron meant? Like positive as in yes and not HIV positive.

Except it wasn’t what he said. “If you have pictures of a guy with his tarp off”...

Correct. I’m pretty sure Bieksa had just said he was really positive about something.

It’s also kind of weird to have shirtless pictures of coworkers and I believe that’s the context. I think they’re talking about a fellow SN panelist.

But it’s also not cool to make thinly veiled gay jokes, which is how it has been interpreted, intentional or not.

Uh, not really. In what contexts, in common parlance, would you say someone is "positive for something"? It's either drug testing or some sort of illness, and the first type of illness associated with "positive" is generally HIV. Due to prevailing circumstances, maybe COVID, but I don't see how that would make sense. And even the drugs thing, what would having a picture of a man with his shirt off have to do with you taking drugs?

I'm struggling to find a generous interpretation here.

Ron was having fun and he thought he was back in the early 90s for a moment. He's human, but that is over the line these days and the moment will cost him. I actually like Ron, having grown up watching him every week, but anybody who was alive in the 80s knows what he meant.
