But Oilers is more disappointing to their fans as they thought they have a contender

Not to Oilers fans. They thought the have a contender with 2 superstars. 2 Norris caliber dmen and an all star goalie

Flames for sure as only Oilers fans and media thought they were a cup contender. The Oilers had a successful regular season that they will not likely repeat in a regular NHL season where they don't play the Senators 9 times. The sweep simply exposed their lack of depth and the fact that the playoffs is not kind to teams that rely on one or two players to stir the drink. Flames were flat out terrible this season, arguably as bad a Flames team as we have seen in some time.

Flames by far. Oilers had a great regular season. Choked hard in the playoffs, but at least they were in the playoffs.

Flames were a gong show minus the first 5 and last 10-15 games. The rest of the season was generally unwatchable. Embarrassing and disgraceful were common descriptors.

I wanna say the Flames based purely on results, but I'm going to say the Oilers for one big reason:

I think McDavid has internally given an ultimatum to management that he wants out if they can't or won't substantially improve the supporting roster to be a better playoff team. I think this was the last year he had given them to make a decent team or go anywhere in the playoffs. I think his patience is clearly wearing thin and you can see it in his demeanor towards his teammates and the media. If he doesn't request a trade in this off-season, it isn't far off. They will trade him and they won't get anywhere near his value in a trade because there's no way you really can. This playoff loss may permanently set back the entire franchise.

To be fair, this is speculation, but I think it has merit.

I don't think Oiler fans process disappointment the same way normal people do.
They always have sky-high expectations, the team performs terribly, but then the fans instantly forget. Habs fans are similar.

The Flames' season couldn't have gone much worse in the grand scheme of things. Out of the playoffs by March, only drafting 12th. Cap team, several contracts to old players, the young core has hardly any term left on the contracts, the prospect pool is pretty shallow.

I gotta say it's the team that has drafted 1, 1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 6, 6, 7, 8, 10, 10, 22, 22

But, I was already pretty sure there wasn't very much success coming towards the team who drafted in the same time span: 4, 6, 6, 12*, 13, 13*, 14*, 15*, 16, 23, 24, 25, 26

Seeing it written out like this is pretty crazy. We can delete the four 1OAs and the 3OA, and the Oilers still have four more top 10 picks:

1, 1, 1, 1, 3,
4, 6, 6, 7, 8, 10, 10, 22, 22

4, 6, 6, 12*, 13, 13*, 14*, 15*, 16, 23, 24, 25, 26

As an outsider, I have an opinion on this, and I hope not to offend. But, for various reasons, I can't help but see your Flames as the more disappointing.

1. Failed to qualify for playoffs.
A team can't hoist the Cup if they don't make the tournament, and even a low seed has a chance to be a Cinderella. Your guys fell just short, that other team made it, and, while they did blow it, they had brief (if misguided) hope.

2. Coaching change mid-season.
It is never a good sign when this kind of drastic move is necessary. Moreover, this observer feels that Sutter is a bit of a regressive choice for HC. Dour, conservative, with a prior history with this franchise, and a noted short "sell by" date with personnel, Sutter seems an uninspired choice to lead an NHL team in the decade of the 20s.

3. Unsettled roster, with some under-performance.
All season on CP, I noticed unhappiness and speculation about some of your top players from prior seasons. At times Gaudreau, Monaham, Gio, and others were discussed, in terms of what line should they play, or should they even be moved. Obviously, the fan feeling is the roster needs some kind of overhaul to advance quality of play. Also, another year has ticked off on all their careers. So this indicates, to me, that the disappointment in this squad was deeper than just the failure to advance to the playoffs

Again, just observations from a friendly outsider, here at CP, and I certainly do not intend to be a troll of offend. Wishing for better results in the future for both our squads, (unlike this season, where my guys were sunk by either a lack of experience up and down the forward roster, and a lack of talent up and down the defensive roster.)

Easily the Flames. The Oilers choked in the playoffs, but the Flames have finally fully revealed themselves to be a fundamentally broken roster.

Disappointing to who? Me? The Flames. The Oiler’s season, the end anyway, was just fine.

Flames for sure.

Oilers overachieved in the regular season and it raised expectations so they are left shocked after losing so quickly. For them it must feel like another wasted year with McDavid who had a historic regular season.

Flames for me disappointed twice. First when they got off to a terrible start and then when they lost 8 of 9 u set Sutter. I thought once they hired Darryl the team was going to turn it around so I was disappointed twice. I also do not think I have witnessed the fanbase this pissed off at the team in my life. There are many on this board who absolutely hate the organization right now so the emotional response is pretty telling

Flames season was pretty much all lows where the Oilers had a decent ride that came to a crashing halt quickly. Both teams likely make huge changes

Well, one team had two MVP centres, had ostensibly the best player since Sid score 100 points in 50 games, and got bumrushed in the first round 4-0 (by the Jets lol).

And the other team was the Calgary Flames.

What the Flames are going through right now, not normal.
The Flames. Hands down. The Flames have won 1 playoff series since 2004 and have failed to qualify 11 times over the last 20 seasons played.

This is bang on what the Flames are, and it's every bit as exhausting to watch the endless cycle of wash, rinse, repeat as it is to listen to fans who are completely ignoring how inept and unwilling to change this franchise really is.

Flames and their inescapable nightmare of mediocrity weighs heavy on my soul, but in 2 years no one outside the city will remember the flames season, but lot's of people are going to remember the oilers epic collapse for a long time.

The Flames, and it’s not even close.

The Oilers overachieved in nearly every aspect.

The Flames underachieved in nearly every aspect.

Why is this even a question?

Both suck but a 4 game opening round sweep is about the worst thing as a fan. You don't get to enjoy a single moment of happiness in the playoffs AND you get a lower draft pick.
I'd rather miss completely than get swept in the 1st round. 1st round sweeps just suck in every way.
Relative to expectation both failed mightily and both franchises now have real question marks about the future. What they have been doing isn't working.

On reasonable expectations, I think it belongs to the Flames. In an easy division they were suppose to challenge for a playoff spot and we know one of the teams they would be fighting with is the Oilers. We also know that having the best player in the world isn't a guarantee to get in the playoffs (2002 Iginla) and the Oilers would need to overachieve to get a comfortable playoff spot.

However, based on fan expectations, has to be the Oilers. They thought drafting McDavid wasn't just a guarantee to make the playoffs but win the Cup. Every year they don't is another hugely disappointment season to their fans. And they're from Edmonton so we know they aren't going to learn quick.
