I don't understand these hypothetical "should we trade ..." discussions. They are absolutely meaningless. If the return is good to great - then yes. If the return is meh to bad, then no. This applies to ANY player on ANY team. How else can the OP's question be answered?

If the team decides to rebuild, than might as well trade Gaudreau.

But if the team decides to go all in, keep him and try to re-sign him. He's still an elite, dynamic game breaker and these guys are so hard to find. Losing these type of players make you worse, not better. It could take the Flames a while to find another Gaudreau, so if we want to win now, Gaudreau can help the team do that.

I answer it this way

If he has an extension before the draft, then you keep him.

Otherwise they are compelled to trade him before his 5 team trade clause kicks in or you lose all leverage in a deal or keep him for a year and he walks away for nothing.

Trade. Team is too small and you can't win much when your best player is too scared to engage in high pressure games. Love Johnny, and fun to watch, but not a guy that can be the main cog in the machine.

Obviously you have to try and get Johnny to stay. Letting him walk for nothing is unacceptable.

Trading him is an option, but if your aim is to get Eichel, wouldn't you want to keep the American players on the roster? Eichel and Gaudreau would be a deadly 1-2 combo.

I don't necessarily buy the idea Johnny is set on playing out east. I'm sure he's even thought about playing his entire career here. No doubt he's thought about testing free agency as well but can't blame him for that.

If we put the right pieces together it would likely make Johnny lean towards the stay in Calgary side. Having a puck carrying center who is dynamic and can create plays is exactly what Johnny has always needed.

Some people say you can't win the cup if Gaudreau is the best player on your team. I'd say you'd stand a much better chance if Gaudreau isn't even the best player on his line. Bring in an effective puck carrier to take the heat off Johnny on zone entries.

I am beginning to think sign Gaudreau and trade Tkachuk.

Impossible to answer without knowing what the return would be. Since I am in favour of a complete rebuild, I say yes if it is for a top prospect, high 1st rounder, or a young player with upside. I am not in favour of a lateral move.

Depends on what the cost is, what the term is, and what you can get for him in a trade.

It’s like asking whether the Flames should draft a Canadian, US or European player with its first pick this year? To many variables to answer at this stage.

Trade.

If the team will be crap without him, they will be crap with him, too.

I don't think we have as much reason to hope for similar results, but NYI lost Tavares for nothing and ended up better. BOS gave away Thornton for a poor return and ended up better. CAR moved on from Skinner and improved.

How many wingers signed to big deals after age 26 end up working out really well?

Mark Stone (so far)
Daniel Sedin
Zetterberg
Marchand

There's maybe another dozen or so that are 'unregrettable' (e.g. Oshie, Radulov, maybe Gaborik's big deal with the Rangers even though they ended up trading him), but the list of disappointments and disasters is much, much longer.

Re-sign

He's the only player on this team that can take over a game himself. If we trade him we should just rebuild period. And that shouldn't happen given our coach

Talented but complimentary player to me. I’d be fine with trading him as I don’t don’t think you can win with him as the centre piece. I think he’s a lot lke Kessel in Toronto vs Pittsburg. Happy to be wrong though.

Same issue we had with Iggy. Can we finally give him a pair of high skill linemates? If this iteration of the Flames (still) can't, then trade him and rebuild again.

Have a full extension worked out to be signed the day of, if not trade. Can not lose that asset for nothing or else we are really screwed.

If he's willing to re-sign this summer then yes do it. And hopefully you've got an idea of his desires by the time the draft rolls around.

If you get the feeling he wants to wait until next season or flat out leave you trade him ASAP.

To me I'd probably re-sign him for less than $8M, but anything more than that and I'd probably look for a trade.
$8 mil is around my limit. If he signed 5 years at $7.75 then it’s hard not to resign him. IMO he’s worth about that and hopefully at some point the cap will go up. 34 isn’t great age for that deal to expire at but it isn’t bad either

$8 mil or more just doesn’t add up for me that this team can figure it out while he’s on the team

I’m also all for trading him monahan and Tkachuk but I just don’t think it’s even an option. I would be shocked if this team actually did it. So whoever signs the best deal and inks it this summer between him and Tkachuk can stay they other can go

If he's unsigned by the draft, trade him. Simple as that

Happy to post a poll but unsure how to word it as both scenarios depend on several factors
- What can you get in a trade
- What is the term and $ on a possible extension?

Open to suggestions on how to word the poll but a simple sign or trade seems to simple to reveal how people feel.

This, plus only if they are committed to improving the rest of the team.

No way he re-signs. Would be shocked if he did. To me it’s painfully obvious that he will pursue going east.

I will always have a tremendous amount of respect for him though. Didn’t cry or complain about anything when he was under contract. Has said all the right things and has been a true pro.
