Ah! Good Ol' Freddy!

That guy was a bright star in a grim time.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

I had an embarrassing moment as an usher at a Flames game. It was in 03/04, earlier in the season and the Dome was empty.

Sitting in a mostly empty row (Right next to where I was stationed), with one other guy, decently dressed, was a guy who looked EXACTLY like Freddie. He was one of my favourite Flames, and he is very distinct looking. I thought about asking him for probably an hour. Every time I looked at him I solidified my thoughts more. “That is 100% Freddie”. My hold back was obvious... how do I ask one of the only black guys in the building if he was the black goalie for the Flames (at least that’s how I could see it coming across). I almost talked myself out of it because I felt dumb asking him.... but I had to. I mean, it’s Freddie!

It wasn’t. But the guy was cool and said he’d heard it before. Looked just like him. I still tell myself it actually was and he was being chill.

Oh yeah....but back then we knew it was grim and they promised us better times were ahead.

And we were stupid enough to believe them.

Now things are grim and they arent getting any better anytime soon.

But we know that now.

There a certain calm, a certain peace that comes with understanding.

Just embrace it. Dont pine for greater achievements, just accept that this team sucks. They suck now, they'll suck in the future.

If you take joy in well-expected disappointment well then, boy, this team is the team for you!

Back in 2001 there was no bright outlook for the future because of the NHL economic landscape. I was much more concerned about the Flames actually staying in Calgary than I had any hope that they would ever again be any good. They were a feeder team for the richer teams from which to pluck star players.

At least now, the playing field has been leveled and there is a realistic hope of the team being much better than they have been this year. Back in 2001 the only thing we could hope for was a rare playoff appearance before all the best Flames players signed huge UFA deals in other markets that the team could not afford.
