I get that, but that’s still some decent cap to fit in next year.

L.A. has lot of cap space next year, real dollars are minimal.

Not worried about LA, it’s Pittsburgh that will be cap space strapped.

According to puckpedia here is the recapture penatly if Carter where to retire in the offseason.

PuckPedia
@PuckPedia
If Carter traded to #LetsGoPens & retires after year, cap recapture would be for 1 year:

#CBJ -$551K
#LAKings -$3.48M
#LetsGoPens $762K Benefit

If 50% retained:

#CBJ -$551K
#LAKings -$3.1M
#LetsGoPens $381K Benefit

Nice little bonus for PIT there if he retires.

Looks like he’s on a heater right now — 2+4 in his last four games, +6.

Otherwise he’s been very quiet this year numbers wise.

From the early trades I have seen so far I think this will be one of the most impactful for the balance of this season. Carter is a proven performer, big body, plays center or wing, and can shoot the puck. If Geno is healthy Carter will score enough on the PP playing with Sid and Geno to make this very good.

You can always bank on Malkin being injured for a good part of every season.

As noted above they can either use Carter as a third line C, or they can slide him over the wing and move him up the lineup if they need to start replacing injured players. Should be a versatile enough guy, and as much as I'm sure he loved playing in LA, a chance to play on a team like the Pens probably does get him excited for the short term.

When it comes to next year...well if they did win it all again, few better ways to retire than as a 3 time cup champ.

Agreed. This is my trade of the day as well. And completely unexpected.
