This will be huge for Calgary's film scene and should provide a case study that can help put us in the consideration set for even more big budget productions.
By all accounts this is going to be a mega-budget production, not your run of the mill zombie thriller. HBO's betting a lot on the Last of Us brand to pull in viewers but they're going to invest to back that up. GoT is probably a better comparable than TWD.

Of course it is. HBO generally doesnt screw around.

Well that's concerning... It makes zero sense that any of those characters would be in episode 1. I'm surprised David is even in season 1.

I'll put it in spoiler tags just in case anyone doesn't want to know when characters may make an appearance.
Spoiler!
Looks like Bill and Frank are season 1 episode 4, and David is season 1 episode 9.
They are also looking for a contortionist if anyone on CP is qualified. LOL!
That makes a lot more sense. David was something like 80-90% of the way through the game. Assuming it's mostly the same as the game, I'd think episode one would cover
Spoiler!
the initial outbreak, Sarah's death and Boston quarantine zone stuff, ending with them meeting Ellie.

Go back and watch how much you have to do to get to that point. The whole prologue happens (which, for me, would be at least one full episode), then the scene in the apartment with Joel and Tess, they decide to go find Robert, they see a bombing and have to change course, they make their way through an infected area, gather information about where Robert is, go have a shootout with some of Robert's men, then him, then chase him down, interrogate him, kill him, then meet an injured Marlene, then go with Marlene to where Ellie is.
That's at least 3 episodes worth of content - more if you want to give some background to Marlene and the Fireflies, which I don't know why you wouldn't.
It just doesn't make sense that this would be so rushed. Presumably they want to milk a few seasons out of it. No reason to do the whole first game (or nearly all of it) in the first season. You could just do it right up until the Henry and Sam thing and you'd be golden, or if you want a happy ending, cap off season 1 with the reunion with Tommy. Plenty of content to fill a season either way. But based on that information, I'm very skeptical about all of this.

For those asking about casting, they have started casting for Bill, Frank and David for episode 1 which starts shooting July 5th.
I dont know the characters at all, but they are looking for ACTRA people, so these would be guest star/recurring roles.
Haven't put the call out for background yet but we'll probably start seeing some of those in the coming weeks/months.
I momentarily considered checking out IATSE, to see if I should try to get into this industry (as I assume the crews are going to be getting bigger in Alberta to fill the demand). I'm currently looking for a job, and am willing to do anything that won't kill me. I have Set Safety and Protocol from a Lifetime movie I did a bit of Office PA work for about 12 years ago. I'm not sure if those things ever expire.
I also see images as myself as Kramer the "Ball Man", being too old for whatever task I might be given to do.

The game itself is only 15ish hours long if you cruise through it, and that’s still a lot of gameplay where the story isn’t progressing much.
You could easily do the first game in one season with 10 1-hour episodes, though being that part of the back half of the game happens in winter and you have a character from that section introduced very late in the season, I would assume that could probably be season 2.
3 episodes before you even meet Ellie would be insane.
Most of the prologue can be done in a couple minutes of flashback. A whole episode on it? No thanks.
Not sure how long they want to run the series if it’s successful, but I don’t see why you would take more than 4 seasons to crank through both games and everything in between.

I was actually thinking
Spoiler!
they should do Left Behind as part of the first couple episodes, in a series of flashbacks that the viewer doesn't immediately know are flashbacks, to introduce Ellie before Joel meets her. Obviously this continues after they meet, to show the climax of Left Behind / Ellie and Riley getting bitten when Joel and Tess find out she's immune.

Either way works. It is a pretty self-contained story that would work well as an episode of TV. But I'm not opposed to doing flashbacks, and I think there will have to be quite a few of them throughout the series for reasons that are probably obvious, so no issue with using them for this in principle, but it's not my first choice.

Dunno. I always sort of assume that any show they launch they're trying to get 5 seasons out of, unless its explicitly stated at the outset to be otherwise (e.g. Watchmen). Most of the actual good stuff is in the first game, so you'd think they'd want to give it all some breathing room.
I could probably map it out more thoughtfully if I wanted to take the time, but say, Ep 1 prologue, Ep 2 finding Robert, Ep 3 Joel meets Ellie and they have a tension-filled trip to meet Tess and Marlene, Ep 4 Joel, Tess and Ellie go to the Capitol culminating with Tess's death, Ep 5 Bill's town, Ep 6 and Ep 7 cover all of Pittsburgh, meeting Henry and Sam and the escape on the bridge (cliffhanger at jump), Ep 8 the sewers and the story of Ish, Ep 9 the town with either Henry / Sam's death as the ending or a cliffhanger with blood dripping down Sam's leg, and either way, Ep 10 has the reunion with Tommy.
I mean that's just one option, but it makes sense and allows for a good re-set for the first couple episodes of season 2, which would probably wrap up the first game. Then season 3 is the "in between time" to lead into season 4 which starts the second game, although as you're aware I would organize that whole story very differently, which re-organization would also apply to the TV show version.
I mean I think it's pretty clear that I should be the showrunner for this.

Ok, I do actually see what you're saying here and think it could work, so credit where credit is due.
Definitely one of the more exciting parts of this is if they do cover the second game they could (and would likely have to, just by the nature of television) fix the horrendous story pacing/organization.
Also I just read this, which gives me good feelings about the show (along with the guy behind Chernobyl writing it, which was one of the best shows I've seen in ages):
Quote:
"For example, in the game, there's so much action you have to have to train the player about mechanics. You have to have more violence and more spectacle to some degree than you would need on a TV show because you don't need to train people on how to use a gun. So that's something that's been really different, and HBO's been great in pushing us to move away from hardcore action and focus more on the drama of the character."

I'd fully support Corsi as showrunner, haha. I thought your reorganization of the story in the second game was spot on.
