Moves like this just reduce competition and screw the end users/consumers.
I just have Shaw for internet now and Rogers for my phone, so I guess back to bundling?

As far as cable goes, Rogers was by far the worst utility I have ever dealt with. That is bad news all around. They would schedule repairs and outages during Playoffs and World Cup games.
Bundling discount? Lol, they don’t care about keeping customers. Hello Telus.....

This does make sense. I had gotten a sizable Angus Reid survey last week about a hypothetical situation where a national company was taking over a company based in western Canada. They also had focus groups on this, but I didn’t participate on those.
They were using TD and ATB as the companies for the survey. It does look like it was about this particular news though now,

Canada regulatory capture is egregiously bad. Sadly none of the Canadian political parties in power are doing anything to fight that.

Bad for consumers and bad for Calgary and western Canada. It's the loss of a head office which is never good. Like them or not Shaw was an Alberta business success story (started in Edmonton, grew the business and built a significant corporate presence when HQ moved to Calgary). This will all disappear.

I find it funny that Shaw still calls their internet Fibre+ but it's still just old fashioned copper coax.
Not there there is a problem with coax. You can get great speeds. Just funny how they have to mislead in their marketing because Telus actually has fibre optic.

If the deals goes through I would assume that Shaw Cable would continue to operate under the same brand for quite some time.

From a innovation standpoint, I am willing to bet this is good news. Rogers tends to be quite a bit ahead of Shaw on hardware and network. Shaw always struggled to roll out cable boxes with similar features to the Rogers or Comcast versions. 4K feeds may also finally start showing up at Shaw, and maybe even Flames broadcasts since Rogers and Telus both can actually handle that?
but outside that, less competition overall. Higher prices. Less jobs in Calgary potentially/realistically.
Way of the world these days, size matters, and Shaw was far too small a fish in a lot of ways.

Calgary will take a massive hit on jobs with this as I'm sure most of the infrastructure will move East and be taken over by Rogers, we'll basically become a branch city of Roger's. They wouldn't have announced this if they didn't have a really good idea that the Regulators will approve it, I expect that Roger's sent out a lot of "Christmas hams" this year, and the share holders seem to be onboard.
I expect this one to go through as fast as humanly possible, Rogers is hugely influencial

Honest question, to who?
The foreign backers of Wind left a long time ago when they realized Canada doesn't actually want a significant fourth player.
Also with the anti investment work the Liberals have done the last 6 years, does anyone want to jump into a small market with high costs and a government that will do sweet all to ensure fair play?
My guess is they sell to a "startup" that does little to nothing with the assets for a few years, then flips them back to the Big 3. Government shrugs and life moves on.

That's a plan.
A start up formed by former Shaw executives? They sit on it for a year and sell it back at a massive profit.

At one point in the 80s one of them had the north part of the city and the other the south.

Is Telus still considered part of the big three? Seems like only a matter of time till Rogers or Bell gobble them up too.

is that when the asset swaps were happening between the two? I recall a number of radio stations swapped, perhaps television... maybe even the utilities themselves.

In terms of wireless business isn't Telus bigger than Bell? Bell Media as whole is larger than Telus though.
I always thought that Telus and Shaw should merger as Shaw could focus on the media side of the business and Telus could focus on wireless.
