the internet happened...that and every game being on TV
I remember when it was such a treat to see a glimpse of Flames highlights during one of the many Flames games with no local TV broadcast.

Don't believe it's the internet. NFL still does game breaks.

I miss the in game updates. As Girly has noted - other sports do it.
Quick highlight, update on the score and out.
You can't be worried about spoiling games for people who are PVRing them.

I agree, I miss these. On NFL broadcasts, they cut to scoring plays or other big plays and it's always a little exciting to see what's about to happen.

And they're spoiling games anyways, they often show the out of town scores in the top right-hand corner during play.

I feel like in-game updates stopped after the rule changes came in to speed up the games, reducing the tv timeouts. Faceoffs happen immediately now except for the set schedule of TV timeouts, thus, ads are shown during the limited breaks now instead of cutting to highlights.

NFL broadcasts get them inbetween plays, and take no longer than 10/15 seconds. If NHL broadcasts want to get them in, they can. IIRC Sportsnet for example near the end of the game gets their Sportsnet Central teaser in during a brief play stoppage.

NFL has a break every 10 seconds or less...in hockey you can get 5+ minutes of non stop action. Apples and Oranges

I'm guessing with the ability to PVR, coupled with the fact that people who want to check scores can do so in real time on their devices, they figured it's better to not show it so people aren't spoiled in case they want to watch the game later. In the past, no one had that ability, unless I guess they record it on a separate TV on VHS.

There are plenty of breaks in an NHL game IMO, no fewer now compared to when they used to do them.
And I agree it’s not the spoiler thing. Other scores are posted on the screen and as many have said, there would be many more pissed off people spoiled by NFL and college football scores.
I presume they don’t do it because they don’t think enough people care to see them. Just not sure I trust their acumen when it comes to assessing viewers tastes.

Sure its possible but way fewer and shorter breaks in a hockey game...football has tons of time to fill
IMO

Probably the real answer is that advertisers pay for a even a 5 second ad break while updates get you zero revenue.

THIS HNIC UPDATE BOUGHT YOU BY CALGARY PUCK. The Oilers continue to #### the bed as they give up a 4th goal in the period. Mike Smith caught wandering out of his net and it's an easy tap in to an open net for Paul Byron. Habs in control 5-2 in the 2nd. Back to you Chris.

Real talk tho, percentage of viewers who watch the game, how many of them are PVR'ing it? Probably less than 1%? And as mentioned, the ticker is shown in game. So spoilers has nothing to do with it, nor should it.
