RIP Walter, the true Hockey Dad. So many parents of pro athletes these days want to profit from their kids success. Walter wanted nothing and gave everything.

What a sad day for hockey. Wayne is and always has been a great ambassador for the game and it's easy to see where it came from. His amazing father, who was also an amazing ambassador for the game.
Rest in peace Walter. you lived a good and noble life.

RIP, Walter. I remember my Dad and I made the trip to Brantford when I was 12. I wanted to visit 42 Varadi Avenue but nearly chickened out. Thankfully, my Dad encouraged me to go through with it. Walter answered the door, let us in and gave us a tour of the house. It was so cool! He gave me a bunch of autographed Gretz pics and some other cool merch. Total class act and he was generous enough to give me (a complete stranger) an experience I’d never forget. He was a great ambassador for the sport and a very generous, humble man.

Many moons ago, I was a flight attendant and had Walter on numerous flights.
On each and every one of them, once in the air, he would get up and walk through the cabin, shaking hands and taking pictures with anyone who wanted to say hi. He'd tell stories about Wayne and talk to kids about their hockey dreams. He seemed like an amazing person.

Random: He would also hand out 2" lime green round button pins for the now defunct JetsGo airline while he flew on the one I worked for. I didn't understood that one but never questioned it cause he was Walter Gretzky and it still makes me laugh to this day. RIP

James Duthie just told a story about golfing with Walter, and Walter spent the whole game looking for golf balls. Just a regular blue collar guy.

Gino Reda had some great stories about Walters selflessness and how he treated all his children equally even when all the attention was on Wayne.

A great man.

Do you even know the meaning of the term ambulance chaser?

Had a minor league coach who was coached by Walter, you could tell the impact Walter had on him in such a positive way. Sounded like a fantastic person and someone we should all strive to be like.

I'm forever going to blame CP for his death.
I swear you guys used Walter as an offering to get Sutter back as coach.

Sat beside him at the Salt Lake City gold medal game. Since that arena was so small, and had no suites, there were a whole lot of fairly famous Canadians just sitting with everyone else. I agree with others. He was a very approachable guy and was happy to take pictures with anyone who asked.
