There might be something rotten in Calgary but it has nothing to do with Simon . Simon had a good 4-6 week stint with Crosby to get some points . Pitt after seeing him there still chose to trade for 2 top 6 wingers , driving him down the lineup. Think he has only played 9 games with flames . So really instead of having 0 points he should have 2 points . As Pitt fans said, if he can’t cut it top 6 , he is pretty much useless. I highly doubt he is nhl next year.

I didn't expect much from Simon as I knew nothing about him. I was definitely intrigued by leivo. However, leivo has been brutal. I am pretty sure he's the worst defensive board battle player on the team outside gaudreau (who I don't really even hold against gaudreau).

To me, this feels like the team is putting the blame for their lack of success on the guys who have the least influence over it.
It's not like I care about Simon, but to me he hasn't played below his level any more than at least a dozen other guys on this team. Simon is a support piece, he's roster filler that can be lifted by better players around him, but who's not going to lift anyone himself.

I wouldn't mind seeing Valterri Filppula picked up.
So there could be a Phillips - Philp - Filppula line with the Heat. Just to drive Rob Kerr nuts.

Probably at least 1 goal in the first 20+ games

Good enough to play with Crosby in Pittsburgh, and even have Crosby openly voice regret that he was losing him as a winger. Bad enough to not even crack the 4th line in Calgary.
Pittsburgh: 12-8-1
Calgary: 10-11-2

I’d say Markstrom, Tanev, Mangiapane and maybe Lucic play to their potential. I think Valimaki is what I expected too. Dube is a little invisible these days, but first part of the season him too.

100% truth, thanks.
Sorry, I’m maybe a little bitter about Flames hockey just now. Was really expecting some changes after the road trip. I think I check in here hourly (or was) expecting some news of ummm well anything. Well, something more substantial than so and so on waivers.
This team is one of the worst Flames disasters I’ve seen in 40 years. I thought action might have been appropriate 3 weeks ago (maybe more). After the road trip? I thought action would be taken urgently.
Montreal was in better shape but made changes quickly when they felt performance was going the wrong direction. Ours went from worse to even worse but all is quiet.
40% of the way through a short season. Results below expectations. Performance continues to decline. Momentum going in the wrong direction.
No action. No accountability.

I have to admit, my lack of awareness for teams outside of the Western Conference, and especially outside of our division, is really low. I had never even heard of Domink Simon when we signed him (or Nordstrom for that matter), so my expectations were pretty low for both. I know that probably says more about my lack of interest outside of the Flames and their division, but I do think that I at least heard of most players of consequence in the NHL.
I always just assumed he wouldn't be a regular on the team. Surprised it took this long to jostle him down to the taxi squad.

And Montreal has one win in three games since and it was against the Sens 3rd string goalie with them on a back to back. Time will tell if the Habs made a good move.

Overall I don’t have many complaints about any of Markstrom, Tanev, Mangiapane, Valimaki, Andersson, Lindholm or Gaudreau.
Dube gets a bit of pass but he has been invisible. Lucic has been engaged and contributing but the cap hit will always be a factor. Hanifin I’ve liked but his offensive swagger is all gone. Gio hasn’t been too bad but age is catching up.
The rest of the group, most notably Tkachuk, Monahan and Backlund have not been impressive at all to say the least. The other bottom of the roster forwards have contributed barely anything.
I truly believe the system they play is broken.
Will they make a change this season?
I doubt it.

I think Lindholm has been pretty mediocre. Gaudreau, inconsistent. And Andersson has not been good on many nights.
Markstrom has been great, and Tanev and Mangiapane have shown up every night. But there isn't anyone else on the roster that is 'having a good year' or meeting expectations, never mind exceeding them.

True. I wasn’t suggesting it was a good move but rather that they did take action and made a statement about how play was trending.

Option One: Do nothing.
Option Two: Do something, evaluate, do something else, evaluate, do something else, evaluate.

It’s the coaches stupid systems. Of course Simon, Leivo and Nordstrom have struggled. The bona fide NHL players are struggling and looking like crap playing this garbage system. Of course the borderline players are going to look even worse than they normally do.

My comment was only about “playing to their abilities”, so Lucic’s contract has nothing to do with it.
Lindholm and Gaudreau are not playing to their abilities. Andersson has been a disappointment to me this season. I think he’s struggling supporting Gio, who was the stronger player but is no longer. Plus Rasmus is still young in D years so the role is pretty hefty for a guy his age.
Tanev is great - I love the way he defends. It’s too bad he has zero offence or he’d easily be a Norris candidate IMO. Mangiapane is fine, my only wish is he was not so easy to bounce off his feet.
I actually like Monahan’s effort this year. If he was burying his chances we’d be saying he’s having a great year. His shooting % just sucks.

After scoring 7 goals in 36 games last season and 10 goals in 49 games the year before, I was hoping, with increased ice-time we'd see more from 6'2" 192 lbs right shooting Josh Leivo.
I didn't realize Joakim Nordström once scored 10 goals and 24 points!
Even Dominik Simon had 7 goals and 22 points last season and 8 goals and 28 points the year before.
