Criticize Hamonic for his on-ice performance all you want, but I don’t think it’s anything but a garbage take to be critical of a person for choosing the path Hamonic did at the time he did.

Yup, not going to hold anything over Hammers head in regards to opting out. In fact, I'm quite happy he did. Family first. Anybody who says otherwise, your opinion is simply ignorant.

Hockey wise, I am also glad he stayed home, never thought for 1 second that he was going to be a major factor for the Flames. Every single thing about the Hamonic and Flames partnership from the get go was all sorts of wrong.

Finally, I'm happy he is going to Vancouver and not CGY like it was reportedly down to the two teams. Soon we can forget he ever was a Flame and move on. Maybe the worst trade tree ever made.

Edler - Schmidt
Hughes - Myers
Juolevi - Hamonic
Rathbone - Rafferty

Juolevi > Benn/Fanta
Hamonic >= Stecher
Schmidt >>>> Tanev

Jim Benning has improved the defence without even trying haha.

Schmidt fell to his lap, Travis only wants to play for a Western Canadian team and signs arguably the 2nd best goaltender in the market for Ian Clark to rehab. what an offseason lol

I mean, sure if literally every best case scenario happens then yes all that might be true.

Or... Juolevi could look bad in the NHL given his 1 career game, Hamonic/Myers/Edler/Holtby could all continue to get worse, Schmidt could disappoint on a new team, Hughes could have a sophomore slump, etc.

So, next we'll talk about chances in F and G, shall we?

Even at league minimum I wouldn't want him on the flames ever again, I have a hard time believing he has much competitiveness or passion for the game anymore and is just hoping to get a retirement contract to ride into the sunset.

Hamonic may have all the same misgivings about playing that he did for the bubble last year but he is also at an inflection point in his career. At his age and with how he played last year, he may not get a chance again if he sits out another year.

For all we know, he plans to isolate himself from his family while playing so we shouldn't pass judgment on his decision.

???? His play was nothing that I had hoped for but you can’t question his passion or compete level. He gave it in spades , unfortunately his game was not on the same level.

He may have simply not wanted to be away from his young child for potentially 3 months. And he wasn’t the only one.

The guy blocks shots, plays injured, sticks up for teammates........ leaves the Flames and his competitiveness is questioned. Of all the things to call him out on, that would not be one of them.

He can't practice with the team for 7 days. He's all but put paper to pen on a new contract with the Canucks.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Hamonic should be a good fit with the Canucks. All indications point at a 1 year deal once Canucks move money or apply LTIR (Ferland).

Not sure what games you’ve watched but that’s a massive stretch to say that Juolevi is better than either of those two guys or that Hammer is better than Stecher. I’d say opposite on both. Schmidt might be an improvement on Taney but not a big one.

Hamonic versus Tanev.

Same type of game and intangibles but Hamonic was #2 in TOI for the Flames and Tanev was a distant #4 on the Canucks and Tanev put up 20 pts and Hamonic only 12

Both 30 years old and likely not going to play the full 56 games.

Also interesting that Winnipeg passed on Hamonic in favour of Forbort.

I'm going to get trashed for saying this, but yeah, all of the recent value signings are making the Tanev signing look even worse.

Tanev has already been declining for 3 years, is old, will be overpaid for 4 years, is injury prone, slow, and has no offense.
They could have signed Haula + Hamonic + Granlund (maybe even Hoffman) instead.
Plus, those would have all been shorter contracts on younger players.

It hurts now, but it'll hurt even more in 2 or 3 years. Especially with the flat cap.

I'm not going to judge him based on not playing in the bubble and more on his play as a Flame which was average at best and terrible at worst. I'm personally glad that the book is closed on one of the worst Flames trades ever. It doesn't compare to the Gilmour or Phaneuf trades but it's up there when you consider the assets they gave up for a guy that was never better than average and replacement level in his last season. It was simply one of Treliving's worst moves made as GM as well as whomever in professional scouting was involved as he wasn't even playing well for the Islanders the season up to the trade. I'm glad that he's resurfaced on a Flames rival as he's just not a good defenseman and a player to exploit.

Not a videogame....you can't just sign guys because you have money and they are available

Also, Tanev is not slow he will be one of the better skating dmen in the Flames

Well that’s not accurate. Sven, Alzner... Rask left due to family reasons.
