You'd still attract some people from across the bridge and the south bay in Oakland. Basically the same with SF. But nobody is travelling to Sac for a Sharks game.

I am not too familiar with the geography of the Bay area, but my understanding was that Oakland is still within the commutershed of San Francisco, at least more so than San Jose. Therefore a franchise in Oakland would still compete with SF franchises for fans.

Heh. Zero way the SAP affiliated Sharks play in something remotely affiliated with Oracle. They're like Coke and Pepsi.

Here is the proposed work being sought by google:
Ironically, the City of Calgary is hoping that such development would happen around the new Flames arena in Victoria Park.

Disband the team and banish everyone in their no good organization to the four corners of England.

Oakland would be much better for attracting SF fan base. After a Shark's game, there's only a single train departing from SJ to SF and it also takes 1.5 hours to get to SF, which makes it very difficult for fans in SF to attend a weekday game.
I would love it if they would move to Chase Center in SF but it doesn't sound like they have the capability to host ice hockey in the arena today.

Surprising that the Sharks would complain about this development. It sounds like a huge increase in potential attendees with good salary. These employees will have money to spend on after work activities, and they're within walking distance to the arena.

It’s so ridiculously stupid that some of these NBA arenas were not built to house the NHL

Skate shaped sideburns should earn a letter.

Is this the first time a team has had to move because their arena caused TOO much development around it????

The arena didn't cause the development.
San Jose city council decided to more than double the number of people working downtown, primarily to benefit Google. The bulk of the development will be going on all at once, constricting road access to the arena, and part of the land for the new offices is being taken from parking lots that the City of San Jose cannot close without violating contractual agreements with the arena and the Sharks.
At this point, the arena is pretty much a high-priced nail house.

The guy in question is Bobby Sheehan.
Took him a while to fully cultivate the look, but clearly it paid off.

Build a new arena somewhere else, sell the SAP Center to Google so they can use it as a datacenter for thousands of servers. Google would probably save money.

A nail house is a Chinese neologism for homes belonging to people (sometimes called "stubborn nails") who refuse to make room for real estate development. The term, a pun coined by developers, refers to nails that are stuck in wood, and cannot be pounded down with a hammer.
|
Most nail houses are actual houses – single-family residences. This is the first time I can think of that a sports arena has been cast in the role, but that's essentially what is happening.
