It’s good to see NHL take a strict stance. This will dissuade other teams from such practices in the future. Also sets a precedent (plus our picks automatically move up 1 spot, so cant complain on that front either.

Wow. That's something the NFL would do. Nice to see a team getting rightly punished for circumventing the rules. I do wonder if the penalty would be the same if one of the league's darling teams were the perpetrator but at least the precedent has been set.

Yeah that's harsh to me.

A second in each year seems fair. Taking away that 1st seems really harsh.

So does this mean Calgary will draft number 31 instead of 32 in the 2021 draft?

Chayka thumbed his nose at the old boys club and tried to cheat the system.

IMO, this is the league putting a black mark on Chayka as much as they are doing it on Arizona.

Letting the rest of the league know that hiring Chayka comes with a risk.

Those saying this is too harsh- why? They cheated, created a significant advantage for themselves, and frankly thought they would not face dramatic penalty for it. A dramatic penalty was the only possible solution to ensure that this wouldn't reoccur.

The coyotes are pretty f'ed, as they rightfully should be for pulling that amateur stunt.

I kinda wonder if the NHL will pull a Kovalchuk and change their punishment to putting their 2021 1st at the end of the round.

Either way, I think this punishment makes sense. You can't skirt the rules like they did.

Well deserved IMO. If you just charge them a fine, it sucks a lot for the Coyotes but teams like the Leafs and Rangers might see it and think they can eat the penalty to get personal combine testing

The symbiotic relationship between the NHL and the CHL is crucial

How about the league award their 2021 first rounder to calgary?

In a sense, the punishment is fair. The Coyotes are now the only team that will be able to do physical testing on draft eligible players prior to the draft because of COVID.

At the same time, I think it's very harsh on the fans. That's probably why I don't like it. The Coyotes are already a middling team kind of headed nowhere, and this just forces them to wander the desert aimlessly for one more season when they probably shouldn't. I don't think that's good for the health of the franchise.

As a fan of a team that isn't the Coyotes however, this is good news.

If this ruling can be appealed, I wouldn't be surprised to see it overturned somewhat, and instead give the Coyotes the 32nd pick of the 2021 draft, instead of forfeiting their 1st rounder entirely.

Exactly, don't want to end up like baseball where a team cheats to a championship

If they re-sign him, the 3rd they gave New Jersey next season becomes a 2nd. So there's that, too.

EDIT: Saw that someone else posted that above!

That's the whole thing, it needs to involve significant picks. I think it was Elliotte Friedman who mentioned in an article a few months back that when this rule was first implemented, Lou Lamoriello asked how much the fine would be and when asked why he said so I know what to put in my budget.

This probably blows up his chances of getting hired again.

This whole thing might have even cost him his job for all we know.

They should hold an auction or a lottery for the picks.

That is... nuts. Seems far too harsh. Just the 2nd rounder would have seemed like a steep punishment, but everyone would have gone "eh, fair".

It's made all the more curious when the NHL bends over backwards to excuse certain franchises from the consequences of their actions... the Kings and Mike Richards come to mind.

Hot off the press: Donald Trump names Chayka chief political advisor and placed on the committee overseeing the November elections.

Except the Mike Richards case didn’t establish a precedent. We’ve seen no other teams try it.

But breaking draft rules for a fine? Most teams would consider that the cost of doing business if it gave them an advantage.

I think that’s why the punishment. League needed to establish consequences to deter this behaviour from other teams.
