Iggy definitely got screwed for a few other milestones.

The 2002 Hart Trophy
The 2004 Stanley Cup
The 2004 - 2005 lockout, which broke his consecutive >30 goals per season streak.

Even without those, guy should be a first ballot HOF. Still my favourite all time Flame.

Iggy was amazing and deserved the Hart Trophy but now will get last laugh as he goes into the Hall of Fame while Theodore is nothing.

He was great offensively and defensively until about 08/09, when his defensive game really started to fall off. But up until then he was a physical, offensively elite, 200 ft player.

A shame he never got his cup win here that he deserved in 03/04.

Why did the NHL and Hockey Canada snub this guy while they fall over themselves to promote other stars?
Tough to call that a snub IMO. At this point Crosby was the best player in the world, and had just captained his team to the Stanley Cup the 7 months prior to those Olympics. Crosby was a deserving captain at that time.

Scott Niedermayer was the captain in 2010.

Also the drafting and trading picks didn’t help either. A big reason Washington was able to eventually build a cup winner around Ovechkin was their hoarding of draft picks that led to Kuznetsov and others.
Daryl Sutter had the mindset that he wanted to build a New Jersey Devils type team. He found the goal tender, he thought he had a Steven's esque guy in Phaneuf, and another tough defender in Regehr. He did go hard after Scott Niedermayer in 05. But after losing in 06, he maybe realized a touch late that he was going to need better horses up front. He likely knew he needed to be better at Center too, but when you don't have that commodity it is extremely hard to get it if you didn't draft it.

Although many now look back at the Sutter era Flames with a lot of disdain...outside of the first 10 years in Calgary that was the only other time the team made the playoffs 5 straight seasons and they did it in a league with 30 teams. So that does seem to indicate how good Iginla and Kiprusoff were given that the other support pieces were really not up to task.

Yeah, but the Caps purposely tanked for so many years to get the drafts that was necessary to build that team to a point where they are true contenders.

That's an exaggeration. Washington received the top pick once, which they spent on Ovechkin in 2004. Then in the next three drafts they picked twice in the top-five: Backstrom went #4 in 2006, and Alzner #5 in 2007. The fact that it took them over ten years to win a championship I think counters this notion that the Capitals "tanked."
