This got me thinking, what is the ####tiest place in BC? Other than Cranbrook other nominees would be Trail, Kamloops, and Prince George. Where am I missing?
Kamloops resident here to inform you that Kamloops isn't even on the short list. I've never understood why it gets such a bad reputation.

I'm taking the kids and the wife out to BC this summer, we're going to go the way of Fernie/Cranbrook. I remember last year I wound up staying at a pretty divey motel with the kids (they still loved it god bless em) but on the way home I saw a way , way nicer road side motel. I can't seem to find it online anywhere, likely because it's a smaller family run one. I think it was way outside Cranbrook too.
Anyone have any suggestions for something that's a little further out of town, close to lakes, and has nice outdoor area for kids to run around in?
There is the Stanford west of Fernie that has a waterslide but that's it. You are on the river, and close enough to town though. If you want a lake, Rosen or Tie aren't too far. If your kids are older take them to Silver Springs for some cliff jumping.

Don't stay in Cranbrook
Stay on the hill in Kimberly.

Golden. Dark, backwards hick-town, with the most overrated ski hill in Canada.

Yep, the Stanford is very likely what you saw. The large A-Frame roof, that covers the waterslide, is easily seen from HWY 3.
Abotsford is the only place in Canada(or anywhere in the world) I've stayed at where I had to hide form gunshots, so I'm going with Abostford. I will never, ever enter that city again.

Crazy. I had no idea, what parts?
I often stay right off the highway, at a Best Western, as part of trips to Baker.

I dunno, I was probably 12 at the time. My mom was tired from driving so we stopped at a hotel. Sometime after the band stopped playing below us, gunshots rang out from the parking lot. We were on the second floor so got back from the window and layed down on the floor. I think I slept there.
I'm sure it was a random one off, but between the loud band and the shooting I vowed to never return.

People actually choose to stay the night in Cranbrook? I always thought of it as a place to fill up your car and grab lunch before quickly getting the hell out of town.
It’s not just that it’s a dump and that Cranbrook is one of the more anti-Albertan B.C. cities/towns.

Maybe because it stinks at times but I like it as it has the best summer weather in Canada IMO.
The stink from the pulp mill was mostly rectified by raising the stack up the hillside. Now the smell is only noticable a handful of days a year. Air quality is poor though, due to it being so dry and dusty here. Particulate levels are above the recommended range a lot of the time.
On the positive side the weather is great, the fishing, golfing and mountain biking are literally world class. There is a large, family friendly ski resort 45 minutes from downtown. The economy is more and more knowledge-based and diverse every year. You can drive an hour any direction except south and get lost and die in the bush. If that isn't your scene it's 3.5 hours to Vancouver, 2.5 to Roger's pass, 6 hours to Calgary and the shuswap is in our backyard.

Are you a Bonvoy member? Worth joining as there are good perks as you move up in status and their group of hotels are always family friendly.
We love the Creston Valley Motel. It's an older motel, but it's clean as a whistle & really decent on price. They've renovated & while a lot of the fixtures & fittings are a bit on the older, dated side, everything works wonderfully, the beds are comfy (the comforters are ugly but big deal), & the owners are fabulous (unless ownership has changed hands since we last stayed there 2 years ago), with lots of good suggestions for different places to eat, where to dog walk, which U-Pick places are best and so on. We've been going there off and on for the past 30 years. We haven't been in the past 2 years because we have the RV now, plus, my brother just moved into the area (a hop, skip & a jump out of town) to a big acreage with lots of room even if we didn't haul the trailer. I'm kind of going to miss staying there.
