Powerplay Quarterback

Granlund would be a great option for filling the RW spot next to Backlund and Chucky

I think the ones that make the most sense are Lehner, Markstrom, and Hall.
Markstrom is the only player over 30 who the Flames should even consider IMO.

I'll take Galchenyuk on the third line for sure, and hopefully it ends up not being Yukky.
Hall for the top six and Gudas to help fill the void of right handed dmen.
Outgoing is Hamonic or Brodie or both which would shave the cap to make these acquisitions

I wonder how many of those guys will actually make it to free agency.
Is it realistic to think the Canucks will let Markstrom walk? Or the Blues and their captain a year after they won the Cup (and are favourites to repeat)?

Elite talent? Sure, it may not work out perfectly but it's very rarely an absolute disaster like what we've seen with Brouwer and Neal in recent years here.
Don't pay market price for players unless they're elite, because elite players generally remain useful late into their careers while other players generally collapse once they get north of 31/32.

Well the Blues have just about zero space to sign Pietrangelo. They already have Parayko, Dunn, Faulk, Scandella, Gunnarsson, and Bortuzzo committed for next year and it looks like they'll have around $2-3 million to play with. Don't think Pietrangelo will take anything in that ballpark.

Yikes, I didn't realize they were that tight. Still, you'd think they'll try to dump some money to make room for him before letting him walk away.

The Blues did it with Backes and that worked out for them ok... I think they're confident enough in Dunn's ability to take on an increased role. They really like Scott Perunovich, who won the Hobey Baker this year for UMD and is a really good puck-moving dman.

Hall needs to be the priority. Other than that some depth signings and if they can swing it re-signing Brodie would be ideal.

I’d be shocked if Markstrom walks, he’s already said he wants to stay. If the Canucks offer him anything decent he’s staying.

None of these UFA goalies really jump out at me anyways. You'll probably just end up paying at least double the cap hit for roughly the same level of goaltending and then have Rittich as a $2.75 million back up for a season.
The only exception might be Holtby if he can be had at a bargain and the Flames think they know how to fix him. He's been in decline for 3 seasons now, but like I said, if he can be fixed somehow, the guy knows how to win and has been elite for most of his career.
If they can't bring Talbot back then I wouldn't mind seeing the Flame take a gamble on Brossoit to 50/30 with Rittich.

Canucks have massive cap issues coming though and can only protect one goalie.
So Demko is gone?

I am fine with us re-signing one of our UFA D men to fill out the D. Other than that stay away. Especially Hall!

Do you think Seattle would take him?
The expansion draft is a year away. Do you think the Canucks are ready to hand Demko the reins next year?
That seems like a dangerous gamble to cut Markstrom loose and go all-in on Demko, hoping he'll be the saviour.

All the major issues are coming when guys like Beagle and Eriksson come off the books. Markstrom stays. Demko likely gets dealt and DiPietro becomes the next heir apparent.

He actually took the time to re-post the quote in a sarcastic attempt to make me look bad. This is a place where we can discuss theoretical scenarios-and if other posters can discuss signing guys like Gudas,Demelo,Hall, and Markstrom, as well as our own guys like Brodie and Hamonic, then it's not that outlandish to bring up Brendan Dillon. He's 29, but is still playing Impact hockey, and would THEORETICALLY fill a need on our team if the money is right. Still has good advanced stats too.

I think Markstrom is an excellent goalie, but I also think that the Flames have a goalie on his same trajectory already on the roster. Rittich's career has tracked pretty closely to Marksrom's so far, so by this time next year I think there is a good chance Markstrom would be completely redundant.

I just read somewhere that Holtby plans on cashing in on this next contract because it's his first time being a free agent. I can't see him getting that big of a raise at all but I would take him on the Flames for a reasonable price. Lehner seems like a good choice but I'm not over the moon on him. I'd like to see the team go after a guy like Murray or Jarry or another young goalie.

I would stay far, far away from Holtby. He's been one of the least effective goalies in the NHL over the last three years.

We will see about that...some massive contracts coming up, double digits per season for a couple guys IMO
