I was told it was a trip on 120L which ties BC and Alberta together, but AESO expects power to begin being restored around 4:30. It may take longer than that for some areas as it's a gradual shift when restoring bulk levels of power.

That was my first thought also...this from the head of Calgary's EMA makes some sense...

MATL tripped at the same time, which makes me think that some event happened in the US.

You are probably right that it was a frequency excursion which then tripped a bunch of substations.

Oh I didnt see MATL tripped too, I just assumed it was planned maintenance and then 120L tripped. Interesting.

Lightning strike was on the BC side of the border that created the events to the outage.
