I'm loving the Chinooks. Today it is so nice outside. I don't have to wear a toque or gloves. There's much entertainment to be had by breaking wind into the wind...

and hey, with our wonderful city council, how would we have snow cleared from the streets if it weren't for chinooks in the winter?

I get minor headaches from them, but the weather trade off is worth it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinook_wind

A similar phenomenon (also called chinook winds) occurs in the Cook Inlet region in Alaska as air moves over the Chugach mountains between Prince William Sound and Portage Glacier. Anchorage residents commonly (but wrongly) believe the warm winds to be a midwinter gift from Hawaii, melting snow and leaving streets slushy and muddy. Chinook winds (though they may be named something else) can occur in most places with nearby mountains. Denver for example, is often affected with chinook winds from the Front Range raising winter temperatures from below freezing to around 50 °F (10 °C), in just a few hours. Chinook winds also occur in Salt Lake City and Albuquerque

I think something similar happens in Bavaria. I forget what they call it there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%B6hn_wind

The name föhn (from the German Föhn, pronounced [føːn]) originated in the Alps, and central Europe enjoys a warmer climate due to them. Föhn winds are notorious among mountaineers in the Alps, especially those climbing the Eiger,

Zonda winds" in Argentina
"Diablo winds" in the San Francisco Bay Area, United States
"Santa Ana winds" in Southern California, United States
"The Nor'wester" in southern New Zealand
"Halny" in the Carpathians
"Fogony" in the Catalan Pyrenees

Thought I'd share my chinook sunset pics from Satruday. Somewhat relevant! Some crazy looking formations.

You see that clear arch in the bottom of the pictures. That is a Chinook arch, you don't need a weatherman to tell you what it'll be like tomorrow, you just look to the west.

I like looking at the sky in Calgary and the weather there is interesting to talk about, meanwhile here the fog outside lends an air of mystery. Chinooks are one of the bragging points for Calgary compared the the rest of the prairies and a nice break in a long cold winter. It was quite an experience the first winter I spent in Calgary and watched the temperature go from -25C to +10C in about two hours.

Nah, we have them here in Montana too. There is even a small town called Chinook, named after the winds.

I love them, I hope we have many of them!

I like chinooks.

I can go out and run with my IPOD.

When its too cold I have to wear goves and I cant change songs, so I leave it at home.

For this reason alone I like chinooks!

I wish it were like this all year long.

That's beauty, Neeper. Was that shot on Saturday night too? I'm seeing similarities in the cloud formation.

Anyone else feel sorry for poor COP? Every time they try to make snow, a chinook blows in.

But who wants to board on pure ice anyway....
