and yet here in the 40 year history of the club all 6 of their all time D are the D from those years- I mean partly I get it- there are alot of rings within that group- but the fact they haven't had a single top 6 all time d man play a game for them in the last 28 years is striking
Pronger is an obvious exception, fully noting that he only played the one season. But without question the best d-man on the team since Coffey.
*Edit - Lowe also returned to finish his career with the Oilers later in the 90's, but was clearly past his prime and at the end.
Fogolin, I remember the name but don't really remember anything about the player, which is always something you want to hear about an "all-time selection."
Was the last captain prior to Gretzky before voluntarily handing the 'C' over.
It's a pretty comprehensive list, but it underscores one key thing. Their defense has always been rather bland and not dynamic at all outside of Coffey. It's probably why they've had such a historic lack of success over the years.
Their forwards however are some of the all-time greats, so you have to give some respect there.
Uhhh hello, have you heard of Kevin Lowe? Now that’s a guy who wins, nobody knows more about winning than Olde Kevin Lowe (skip to 3:05):

Oh man. I know we all love to hate Edmonton but they won 5 cups in 7 years. That's not a historic lack of success. The Flames would be a far better example of historical ineptitude.

I assume his point was that since their glory years they have had very limited success- and in fact- yes the Flames are nothing to crow about- but 3 playoff appearances in 18 years is pretty desolate- and likely partially explained by the fact that they haven't apparently had a single notable franchise defenceman (ie no-one better than Lee Fogolin or Randy Gregg) in nearly 30 years (edit- yes I understand Pronger etc- but his one year tenure sort of underscores the point- no sustained remarkable dman in 30 years)

The Oilers have been the worst NHL team and possibly the worst professional sporting franchise for well over a decade.
That is an historic lack of success.

I would drop Smyth down to second line, move Draisaitl up to first, drop Simpson to third line. Put in Nugent-Hopkins on 4th line over Buchberger. I drop all the defence by one line and add in Pronger alongside Coffey - So, dropping Fogolin to 4th line D.

Yes, this...thank you.
I thought it was pretty obvious what I was saying. Nobody is taking anything away from their dynasty years. They were legit great, but their defensemen even back then weren't that exceptional beyond Coffey.

Well I will say homer glasses are off, but I like Calgary’s roster way more and still can’t believe we couldn’t hoist more Cups between the mid to late 80’s and early 90’s.
Greasers were stacked up front and their power play could be ridiculous when any team was short handed during their prime years. It seemed to never fail, when the Greasers were down late in a playoff game, they would draw a penalty and tie it up.
Randy Gregg was the defensive conscience of that high octane 80s Oilers dynasty. He was an underrated part of the mix. After hockey he became a family doctor and has kept a high profile in the community. He's like Edmonton's Jim Peplinski in terms of community profile and legacy.
Also of note - two of his kids have competed for Team Canada in speed skating at the Olympics.
Draisatl at left wing is a bit of a copout as he is a centre who happens to play on mcdavids wing sometimes.
That top three centre group is ridiculous. Having strength down the middle is the most important ingredient to win championships, and Gretzky - Messier was a lot to handle in the 80s.
Might be a biased place to ask this, but which group would you rather have?
