that 84 series. what could have been, eh? in the regular season the Flames go 0-7-1 against the Oil, outscored 53 to 27...yet they take them to 7 games in 84 (admittedly on the back of 3 one goal wins, 2 in OT)
that series was a real tough one for young Loob to follow as it coincided with (a late) spring break and we were in the States- was truly almost impossible to follow the series from there (we got there in advance of game 6), no 24 hour sports, no world wide web, and USA today wouldn't have the western hockey scores until 2 days later- so I had to wait to find out Lanny scored in game 6 and then had to wait a few days to find out what happened in game 7 (honestly I know you would think the sports news would cover this at least in passing, but it did not- the big (HUGE) deal at the time was Bobby Knight holding the selection camp for the men's olympic basketball team- I remember some older southern US gentleman cornering me in an elevator and asking me if I thought he had cut the wrong guys- I had no clue- but realized there was no point me asking him if he knew who won game 7 between Calgary and Edmonton
ps- bingo- great link- it might as well be labeled Bearcat's greatest celebrations

Man I remember those days ...
I'd be Hawaii for Xmas or something as a 13-15 year old and would have to sneak into the hotel gift shop to see the box score in USA Today the next day.
No clue otherwise.

Krzysztof Oliwa was a cult hero that season, what a beast of a man.
Depending on who the coach is of this team, imagine being able to take a late game faceoff in a blowout with McCarthy and Oliwa as the wingers (and Regehr as the centre, presumably).
Too young to remember Wilson, Zalapski with an amazing name, Rittich earning the accolades on his own. One of the funner number votes out there.
"I finished that shift as best I could and it settled a little. We get a lot of whacks and hacks in our careers and I thought, 'well, chalk up another one.' I played the rest of the game, but by the end, I couldn't take a deep breath.
"What was going on was my spleen had been lacerated and blood was leaking into my abdomen. As my abdomen filled with blood, it became difficult to breath. The surgeon that performed the splenectomy, I remember him saying, he was quite surprised I hadn't gone into shock because I lost so much blood out of my system that was just sitting in a void in my stomach."

Conroy had a great story about Oliwa a few weeks back on 960 (starts at 34:30 talking about Chris Simon beating up Mike Rathje, but then turns to Oliwa):
Totally forgot about Wilson, but he wasn't a factor in the Flames becoming great. Rittich hopefully leaves a mark as one of the goalies to remember other than just a couple of years with the Flames like all the others that came after Kipper. I would've voted for Boom Boom Babchuk for his big slapshots on the point even if his skating was not that great. Can't be any worse than Zyuzin or Wideman.

He's got great hands for a tough guy that uses his hands to pound skulls! Really liked him as a Flames. It was between him, Zalapski, or Rittich.
I went with Oliwa. He had that psycho “anything can happen” quality and was probably the most feared guy in the league for a year or two. And I remember him scoring a beautiful breakaway goal against the Oilers.
