Sandy McCarthy. Had a chance to serve him while working my first job at the bank in the 90's (a very personable and warm guy). Also a hell of an enforcer who had underrated hands and skills.

Used to love watching Denis Gauthier just crushing people, a rare highlight and mainstay of the forgettable Young Guns years. Felt so bad for him in 2004..earned that run as much as any Flame, then gets injured in the Canucks series and misses the rest of the entire run. Then gets sent to Phoenix that offseason once we're finally good again, to go slum it with another bad team.

It was against the CaSucks, can't remember the exact year. Messier was on the CaSucks. He and some other guy came in on Freddie on a two-on-ZERO. Freddie challenged the shooter (not Messier); pass went over to Messier who had essentially an empty net. Freddie dove back across the crease in desperation, and picked Messier's shot out of the air with the paddle of his stick. It was insane.

The crowd immediately exploded into the "Freddie! Freddie! Freddie!" chants (the same chant I use today when a Flames' goalie makes a miraculous save, regardless of who it is.)

I wish I could find video of the save I've described. (If only Freddie had had a decent team in front of him...)

I was thinking of that exact save.

Didn't remember it was Vancouver, just that it was a barrel roll mid-air paddle save on a 2-on-0.

I was going to pick him too-he beat all the best heavyweights of the era, including Simon, Probert (who got mad at the end of the fight and headbutted him),Domi, and Brashear (who he had to chase down the ice). He is the best enforcer the Flames ever had, and doesn't get enough credit.

I would also pick Gauthier, and Ferland.

Surprised to not see Ference mentioned many times.

In addition to that I really liked
Lombardi
Conroy
Big Ern
McLennan
Ferland (especially for the 2015 playoff run)
Sarich (Oh that hit on Marleau against the Sharks in the playoff run)
In the current team I’d also include
Andersson
Backlund

I won’t include Huselius, Cammalleri, Bouwmeester and Tanguay since they were stars on their particular iterations of the Flames

Pretty damned sure it was against Messier on VCR. I don't think the Flames even won that particular game, but it was the most insane save I'd ever seen live at that point (maybe ever).

Freddie deserves FAR more credit than he gets as a "folksy-fan-fave" goaltender in Flames history. He was legit. And he kept the Flames in so many more games than they deserved to be during his tenure.

Aha! I found it on an old Don Cherry highlight DVD.

^ Great clip. And it also highlights why nobody should ever pick Denis Gauthier. Horrible defending on that odd-man rush.

I appreciate anyone who has posted and not mentioned Brian McGrattan...because clearly you consider him a star! He’s gotta be at or near the top of this list for everyone, no?

To be fair, Gauthier was liked for one reason only:

I have a lot of those loss of balance, awkward spin movements when I get stuck on defense in beer league.
