Meanwhile, Erik Karlsson broke his thumb last night and is out for the season.

That unprotected 1st round pick is sure looking good right now if you're Ottawa... I hope San Jose doesn't win another game for the rest of the season.

They play the Oilers and Canucks one more time each, so they can have 2 wins.

somebody at some point had to say it. Doesn't say much coming from his mouth but you know the media will take this and run with it, hopefully shedding some light on how awful its become

I agree with him that consistent repeat offenders like Evander Kane (and Zack Kassian) should not be getting off so easy. DOPS should be throwing the book at players like that, who have repeatedly shown a complete lack of respect for their fellow players.

I think we need a poll, who's more hard done by the unfair NHL, Evander Kane or poor Zack Kassian. Two of the smartest, noble, misunderstood players to have laced them up.

On first watch of the full speed clip I couldn't tell if that was a 0, 2, or 5 (albeit very different viewing angle and situation here on my laptop).

NHL could emulate rugby and fix this without a significant disruption to the game. It would be great to listen in as the review + on-ice officials discuss it. I hear the XFL is doing that, too.

I'd be fine with holding booth initiated reviews until the next TV timeout (until 10:00 in 3rd period, then it's next whistle). The key thing would be drawing the line to dangerous plays, and non-subjective rules violations (though I'd make a few changes in the rule book to reduce subjectivity, and reduce the number of potential reviews).

Another incident that really bothered me this week was Chara's crosscheck to Gallagher's throat. he received a fine, I think. Just a blown ruling by the DOPS.

I don’t really care how it happens, but I would love absolute transparency from that entire side of the NHL. Player Safety all the way to On-Ice Officiating.

This current state of not believing a goal until the puck is dropped afterward, or not knowing what Goaltender Interference is or what constitutes a general interference call from one play to the next (even within the same game) is hurting the game significantly. Throw in the obvious regular season game-management and the entirely different rule book that gets applied in the playoffs...

But sure, start with Player Safety. How does someone only get 7 games for kicking a player square in the middle of the chest with the bottom of their skate blade, just one month after getting 2 games for attacking a player from behind and repeatedly punching them in the head while they were down on the ice?

How does Lucic get 2 games for a single punch to a players face, when players punch each other in the face all the time with their gloves on in front of refs during scrums? One punch to the face (Lucic vs what's his face) got the exact same suspension as seven punches to the back of the head of someone unable to defend themselves (Kassian vs Tkachuk).

Evander Kane is a punk, 100%, but he’s not wrong about this.

I think this needs to happen. I think they need to make the refs available for questions after games regarding their calls/non-calls. that simple step of accountability could go a long way in restoring confidence.

Anyone see Rinaldo’s dirty head shot in the LA game? I thought it would be more talked about and at least a fine. But I haven’t seen anything or heard anything

It happens. They cant watch everything all the time.
And let's be honest, it's such a rare dirtbag move that the refs aren't even looking for it.

He has a point. But doesn’t get much sympathy because he has been involved in some dirty plays. Have to imagine Doug Wilson doing massive damage control.

Calls out the NHL and George Parros directly. This is going to - and should be - a heavy fine.

However, I hate that I actually agree with Evander Kane. There needs to be an examination of the system that is meant to protect players. As of right now it remains unpredictable, bias, and generally irrational.

That’s because it was brought up as false equivalency by greasy Oiler fans to diminish how heinous Kassian’s action was.

Chara is 6’9”

Gallagher is 5’9”

Gallagher cross checks Chara first to initiate contact. Geometry is not Gallagher’s friend in that matchup.

It’s pretty disgusting that this gets 3 games and Charas cross check to the throat gets a fine. They obviously pick and choose which players to make “examples” of.
