Can that happen during exercise? I didn’t think so but I know very little about it.

This just sounds awful.

I don't think they would be doing compressions if his heart didn't stop. Sounds like a heart attack.

This just sounds awful.

I assure you it can, for certain conditions.

There are a lot of different things that can cause irregular heart behaviour and some are ultimately relatively benign and curable.

Hopefully that is his case

Fair point, could very well be.

(Did that actually happen, or is it hearsay from one fan at this point? You can’t really tell much from any video I have seen)

Info: the only two scenarios where an AED will not shock are a functioning heart rhythm, and flatline.

They are used to kick start an irregular rhythm.

Edit: important follow up. No pulse doesn’t mean the heart is necessarily flatline. In closing, don’t try to decipher “heart stopped” or not. Get on the chest compressions and have someone find an AED. Both things save lives.

I thought tachycardia happened at rest but I don’t even know the circumstances here.

Enough speculation from me anyway. Really hope he is fine.

I thought AEDs only responded to life threatening ventricular arrhythmias though (would not respond to something less serious like A Fib for example)? Regardless, wish him the best.

Yeah, Isn’t that the point of compressions? To physically pump the heart as it’s not pumping on its own?

I’m not an expert, just taken a multi day first aid course.

Likewise

A tachycardia is just a term for rapid heart rate.

Depending on the root cause, exercise (adrenaline) could be a trigger.

I will give you an example - RVOT VT is a condition where in one example the root cause was some rogue pacemaker tissue in the right ventricle outflow tract, which takes over from the natural pacemaker when the heart is subjected to too much adrenaline, and the result is a heart beating steadily at, ex. ~200 bpm. Could be reset using a defib, or maybe beta blockers. Fatiguing as not enough oxygen is being absorbed

I think Gustavsson had SVT which was in his case an extra electrical pathway in the heart, also led to a tachycardia

These things can sometimes be cured by ablation (burning the conductive tissue cells)

There is an incredible amount of knowledge around the heart. Think about it like a pump - there is the plumbing and there is the electrical. Really fascinating stuff.

In general, I think I have a lot of confidence in the medical profession’s capabilities in certain areas, and am not instantly fearful of the worst.

I sure do hope he is okay

I hope he walks away. He's had a great career and a great trophy case. Don't take the chance.

Respectfully, (maybe) no!

If it’s something that can be identified, and say fixed with an ablation, I hope he can just get it fixed, recover fully, and get back on the horse (as long as you are medically cleared)

Hearts aren’t just voodoo, science is awesome!

Correct. A cardiac monitor however that EMS carries is something totally different.

?

As far as I know, you are incorrect

Edit (just so you don’t need to take my word for it):

Quote:
Defibrillation is necessary when a heart starts to beat so fast that very little blood can be pumped out to the body. An AED uses an electric shock to help the heart return to its normal rhythm
The A in AED has to do with automatic detection of a rhythm needing a shock to reset the heart and let the natural pacemaker take over

"With 7:50 remaining in the first period of our game tonight, Jay Bouwmeester suffered a cardiac episode and collapsed on our bench after completing his shift. Thankfully, with the quick response of our medical trainers, Anaheim medical trainers and their team physicians, they were able to stabilize Jay. He was alert and moving all of his extremities as he was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center. Currently, Jay is conscious and alert as he undergoes further testing by Anaheim's physicians. We will update Jay's condition on Wednesday morning."
