It really looks like he was trying to make desperate moves to drag an ageing team across the finish line by whatever means necessary.
Unfortunately, to do that tends to result in an accumulation of declining-value assets, a glut of over-paid, under-performing players on the wrong side of 30 who cant carry the load that they used to in conjunction with a dearth of draft picks and young assets and players who can step in and perform with a measure of cost-control.
That being said, this strategy is far from a secret. I would imagine Wilson had everyone's blessing and sign-off when he made these moves with full knowledge of the likely consequences.

Oof...tearing both ligaments is serious. Players can recover pretty well with one ligament tear, but two? For a hockey player?
In all seriousness he might be an entirely different player when/if he returns. This could be a career changer/ender.
I feel bad for him, but not the Sharks. I hope they're terrible for a long time.

Wilson really had an amazing run retooling that roster over and over again without ever actually rebuilding and while maintaining a very competitive team overall.
Thank goodness it seems like it may finally be coming to an end.

That's the thing, did you foresee Erik Karlsson going from a guy who got legit Conn Smythe consideration while losing in the Eastern Final to a pylon? Did you foresee Brent Burns going from a Norris finalist to finally looking like a forward playing D? Did you see Kane turning into a massive head ca... okay bad example.
At the end of the day, all his moves were shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic because even if those guys were still good, they don't have a goalie who can put up an above .900 save percentage.

Too bad. One of the more underrated players in the game.

Crappy this happened to Hertl.
I'm okay with the season the Sharks are having as a whole though.
Based on some of the contracts they have that run for the next 4-5 years, I think they are looking at a very extended rebuild.

I think lot of people foresaw that based on the severity of Karlsson’s Achilles injury and how it was repaired combined with the style of defense he played. I’m sure we can pull up his signing thread or the trade thread and see the doubters from years ago.

I don't know, I think Wilson deserves criticsim for the Karlsson contract. I think everyone on CP panned that deal. The Burns deal is a legacy contract and those are never team friendly.
I don't think the Kane deal is that bad and if they want to move that contract, I think the Flames should be all over it.

I want no part of that deal.
Kane never plays a full slate of games. He has never hit 60-points. He has only twice scored 30 goals in ten years. His cap hit is $7.0 m for another five years until he is 33-years-old.
The Kane and Couture contracts are probably the best of the five I cited, but it is still pretty bad.

I didn't like the contract for how long it was. I didn't expect it to blow up on them in year two.

Yeah, Tanev has a history of being reckless. Trying to make a big save, but doesn’t. Just reckless.

Yup, where's the uproar?
Gio does that to McDavid, oh Gio is dirty, gotta make a documentary about McDavid's recovery.
Tanev does the exact same thing as Gio, no one even knows he did it.

That is onerous. $41.25 m of contract obligations to five players for at least five years into their mid-to-late thirties, and all with NMCs. The Sharks are in serious, insurmountable trouble.
